Hi - I had a question on AAdvantage awards (I couldn't find the answer elsewhere, but apologies if it has been asked).

For South Pacific-USA awards, do awards have to be booked on a direct flight (e.g. SYD-LAX) or if there is no availability, can an award for the same points be had SYD-HKG-LAX or SYD-NRT-LAX assuming the stopover in HKG or NRT is less than 24 hours? Or does the points cost increase to combine two flights?

I know when booking Europe flights I can cook a QF/BA combination via NRT/HKG for the same price as a QF 1/2 or BA 15/16 flight, but wanted to see if this applies for flights from South Pacific to USA via Asia?

Thanks in advance

AA Awards from South Pacific to North America cannot transit via Asia.
The only way to do so is using two awards.

Thanks very much for those links, appreciate the detailed replies......if only QF had more award availability as per JL/CX between the USA and Australia!

What AA miles and cost in J is it say BNE/HKG then HKG/NYC return?

HKG is Asia 2. So one way is 35+55k. Double that for return. Not sure about the taxes. If you are thinking of going with CX, Alaska miles may be a better option.

I have a JFK-HKG-BKK trip in J next year and the taxes were $42.10 plus $80 phone booking fee. The phone booking fee was unavoidable because the trip is on CX which cannot be booked on line.

The MEL-LAX-JFK trip in J on QF incurred $88.60 in fees and was booked entirely on line.

Thanks guys.

Have used AS miles twice now for CNS/HKG/CNS on CX in J for two, just booked using USDM to Europe for two in J, but not up up scratch yet on AA miles yet but guess once merged be similar to USAirways.

What would sector miles be NYC/HKG and HKG /SYD be in F?... full well knowing F is like wining lotto.

It's quicker for you to look at the link already posted.

There is no SYD-HKG in F any more.

Once AA/US merge I thought that the program would follow the AA system - could be wrong though, it hasn't happened yet so no one truly knows right now.
