Last year I purchased miles to book a J return trip to Europe, where we should have been right now. I cancelled the EY flights in June by phoning the Sydney number. The refund of miles and taxes happened overnight. Edit: because of Covid-19 there were no miles or cash penalties for the cancellation.

Yesterday I received an email from [email protected] informing me that they want to talk to me about my miles balance. First I thought is could be a scam, but all the links in header and footer seem correct. Before I ring the number supplied I would like to see if anyone here knows what this could be about.

Thanks!

Just because I am mildly interested in how scams work - I rang the number (with 1831 infront of it). If it is a scam it's a very polished one. It went straight through (no IVR or hold) to a very friendly gentleman with a native speaker American accent. He opened with "welcome to American Airlines to whom do I have the pleasure of speaking to today?" Upon saying that my name was John [inventive!] he said "Hi John, how can I help you today".

I said that I got an email to call this number but it looked like a scam so was calling to check it out.

He was ready for this. The scripting was superb - he explained that he was from the pro-active team and through out a lovely little teaser about 'calling about my my new level of elite status' and said they were keen to 'make sure that I understood the benefits of my new status'.

He then went to ask if the number I was calling from [read a US number which was apparently showing up - which was clever because no number will (should) be showing up with the 1831 caller id block on*] was the number in my account. I said it was. He then tapped away and said 'hmm that's not coming up as being associated with any account. Do you perhaps have another cell or home number which might be on your account?'

I hung up at this point ... but it was very clever and very polished. This will definitely catch some people out ...

* don't worry even if he has my mobile number I'm not worried - I have an AA account somewhere but it hasn't been used for 20 years and my mobile number is less than 6 months old (at least to me - I still get the previous owners friends calling to invite her out for drinks).
