Answered AA wants to talk to me about my miles balance

Last year I purchased miles to book a J return trip to Europe, where we should have been right now. I cancelled the EY flights in June by phoning the Sydney number. The refund of miles and taxes happened overnight. Edit: because of Covid-19 there were no miles or cash penalties for the cancellation.

Yesterday I received an email from noreply@aa.com informing me that they want to talk to me about my miles balance. First I thought is could be a scam, but all the links in header and footer seem correct. Before I ring the number supplied I would like to see if anyone here knows what this could be about.

Thanks!

Hello Xxxx
I’m with the AAdvantage program at American Airlines. I tried calling you today to check in and see if you had a few minutes to chat about your AAdvantage mileage balance!
When you're free, please call me at (888) 225-0725.
In the meantime, please take care of yourself and know that we are looking forward to welcoming you aboard again soon!

All the best,

Why not just call a publicly listed AA number on their website? That is always the safest way of dealing with such emails.

I’ve been getting them for a while, it’s a no-reply email address so have just ignored them. Have no missed calls either.

As long as the miles were bought through AA and not acquired through some nefarious means then you will be okay.

However, should you be seen as ignoring requests to communicate, then you run the risk of your AA account being closed, and loss of the points balance. Their fraud department probably has a bit more time on their hands at the moment. A red flag may have been raised for some reason.

You could always phone the ‘Australian’ number.

Hum - what a coincidence I received exactly the same e-mail today - thought it was a bit strange but decided to ignore it. Maybe I'll ring the number next week or the Australian number. I just assumed it was some sort of marketing thing.

May just be about a wonderful offer too good to refuse. Hope it’s good news. No email for me yet but will keep a look out.

Actually - this thread has made me worry about this e-mail (now) - I suspect it is an attempt to obtain the password (and/or account number) for my account - on re-reading the e-mail I note the account number was not included and the person who "signed" it was "Tara P" - will report back once I call AA Advantage on their listed number.

Yes. Well there are people out there who hand over that sort information. 🙄

And then they contact AA (after their password and contact details have been changed) as they can no longer login to their account. Just to discover that the miles have been cleaned out.

Good to know that more people have received this email, but no-one has actually contacted AA. That and the fact that the message does not include the account number now makes me think it is a scam to be ignored.

Good advice too to contact AA on a listed number if one wants to check it out.

Me too! I actually thought it was genuine. Unfortunately when I called their US phone lines had shut.

The message is inconsistent as you did not actually speak to Tara P.

The offer is the current August offer IIRC and the buymiles link seems legit. So if this is a scam it would only work if you rang the number again. Interesting...

“ ..Thanks for speaking with me today! ...“. What’s that all about?

Also, a legitimate ‘buy miles‘ link may have been inserted to mask what is actually going on.
