AA to fly LAX/SYD; Qantas returns to SFO/SYD

Red Roo, I would love to see FRA re-instated while you're at it. Though I would also settle for BER. ;)

While we're at it, when a bird is not going to Vancouver, how about we send it to Seattle. That would give connections with Alaska Airline's hub to Alaska and Canada over the summer months.

I would have thought more pax were going to Alaska for summer than Whistler for winter.

Re: Major new AA route to be announced June 9th.

Is this re-ignition of co-operation with AA a positive sign that QF might be moving back toward the Oneworld fold and away from EK? Probably not but we can hope.

I would like to see Melbourne included in Qantas future plans. MEL-SFO, seasonal MEL-YVR, MEL-PVG, MEL-HNL, perhaps a wide body service to AKL, and of course a service from Singapore to London or into Europe would be a groundbreaking concept!

Now that is an excellent idea, also can cruise out of there to Alaska too, domestic flights a plenty, the Boing factory and its supposed to be a real nice city to see, win, win.

+ ONE FOR Melbourne ON ALL OF THE ABOVE

Re: Major new AA route to be announced June 9th.

Melbourne really has been lacking since VA removed the LAX service...

Like all the other SYD flights, I assume quite a few people will be connecting LAX-SYD-MEL with AA then QF.

MEL's problem is it is not well located for connections to/from the US, extra hour to/from most spots. And Sydney has more, what I would call "classic" or "obvious" touristy things to do (Harbour Bridge, Opera House, etc.) than Melbourne does. Melbourne has plenty as well, they simply aren't as well known here in the US. I know plenty of great things to do in and around Melbourne, and as much as I personally prefer Melbourne to Sydney any AND EVERY day of the week :D, the awareness here in the states of Australia is much more of Sydney than Melbourne. Combined with SYD having a better location for most transfers (particularly to/from NZ when traveling to/from the US, and CNS/Great Barrier Reef) than MEL, and both having roughly the same amount of business traffic (I believe that is the case but don't have solid numbers to back that up), and SYD simply having more destinations served within Australia than MEL does, it is pretty clear to me why SYD sees far more USA flights than MEL does.

Not true. UA launched non stop around the same time that VA withdrew their (3xweekly?) service. So number of non-stops between MEL & LAX has actually increased. [FWIW, ~ 12 months ago there were 10 a week, with UA after these QF changes there will be 16 a week]

Its very well located for those of us that live here.

Maybe so but I have no intention of flying UA. I liked VA, and I'm mostly a QF girl so that limits my options.

And while QF is considering the German option, a QF metal alternative PER-DXB continuing to Germany would be another very positive outcome.

Happy wandering (in this case foolishly ?)

Realistically, how long do you think it will take to get regulatory approval and open bookings? Are we talking multiple months?

Hopefully quicker than JQ HK.

But I think the ACCC and US FTC run to their own timetable

Yes but I still do not like Skybus . MEL is well located for going to Melbourne of course, and for connections to Tasmania, and perfectly fine for going to PER or ADL from here in LOTFAP, but SYD works better for a majority of other situations involving travel to/from the states. It is ironic that the actual terminal setup at MEL for connections is way, way ahead of SYD and particularly of BNE. I'll never get over that BNE has terminals so far apart and insists on charging to take the bus between them , complete and utter bollocks and not befitting of an airport in 2015. I will personally connect at MEL whenever possible if going domestic-international.

Don't fly UA. Don't fly UA. Don't do it. Don't ever do it! :D</p>

I wont, I promise! (well, I am domestically but we wont talk about that...its not by choice :p)

I could not agree more, although I don't use the BNE connection since it is home for me, but honestly, Sydney is just as bad and also charges unless you are a QF or VA pax.

Quite often fly Dom out BNE to enjoy the SYD Flounge, returning direct to BNE. If driving, I usually park at the DOM terminal, the $5 train ride isn't bad. Beats routing back via SYD in these post MASA days.

Yes but at SYD you can at least see one terminal from the other . I also didn't think of it as I haven't personally had to do it. Worse is when VA staff gives you a taxi coupon to go between the terminals, but the taxi drivers make you feel like you just landed in NYC and basically send you in circles until you figure out they don't want a cheap ride and will make you feel unwelcome until you go back to the VA staff and have to ask for a bus coupon (this happened to me at BNE). Run on sentence is intentional, as that was basically me after arriving around 6:30PM on a 13 hour delayed LAX-BNE while trying to get to the domestic terminal ASAP for the last connection of the night to MEL .

Awesomer? News

Well as a LTP this is really really good news and I am stoked.

What would be even more awesome (awesomer!!) is that AA decide it's time to launch a credit card points earning partnership in Australia - say add the AA Citi card options for Aussies. Would be truly appreciated AA?? (please, please pleeeeaassssee)

Re: Awesomer? News

It looks to me as though the flights to SFO will be evening departures in both directions, with a schedule looking something like this:

QF73 SYD 19:00 - SFO 13:30
QF74 SFO 20:30 - SYD 06:30 (+ 2 days)

I should point out that I have no insider knowledge, this is just my instinct based on looking at current schedules.

It won't surprise me for the SYD-HND flight to become a daytime flight in one direction to accommodate the new schedule, though I'm not sure whether it will be QF25 or QF26.
