I will have a spare day 3rd september in Washington DC to acquire additional SCs before heading back to Australia via JFK. Usually quite happy with silver pleb status, but after assisting my mother to check in the other day (she's on gold), the horrendous security line-up made me think twice, in addition to being able to access better seats when booking future trips, qantas club departure upgrades etc and lounge access overseas. I will be doing more travel so I think it's time for gold.

I can either fly from DCA (Reagan national) to do a JFK-SFO for $479 for 150 status credits, and return next day SFO-JFK $479 for additional 150 SCs arriving 345pm. Leaves me a few hours (cutting it a bit fine) to connect my onward flight at 655pm. Any other short hops that I should consider for a better bang for my buck? I will have acquired SC from flying QF PE BNE-JFK return 280, JFK-MIA-EYW 100, EYW-MIA-DCA 100, so I won't need that much more in order to qualify. So, how about it?

You're not going to find good runs from that side of the country unfortunately.

I suggest getting an EF 5 day trial and doing some searching, or do a search here. Secondary airports typically have better runs and you won't find anything good value (eg sub $2.50 per SC) from JFK.

Have a look at a PHL-DFW-LAS run. 210 SCs in F and if timed right isn't too expensive.

East coast only -much more doable:

3rd: DCA-(A)-xMIA-(I)-SJU for USD413 - earns 150 SC's.

4th: SJU-(I)-xMIA-(A)-JFK for USD426 - earns another 150 SC's - gets you into JFK as early as 2:30pm (after an 8:45am departure).

Thank you for all you suggestions AFFers, think we have a winner with serfty's selection. A big thankyou mate, you're a legend! As a bonus I found if I used the multi-city tab the cost reduces to $725. A great resort there too which I will now have to check in and check it out (La Concha Marriot Resort $250million brand new). AA have a deal with the hotel but i can't sync the flights with a hotel booking because of the differing ports of origin (DCA then returning to JFK). The timing is great as I can leave early, arrive at lunchtime, get a suntan in the horizon pool overlooking the ocean view, eat the local cuisine, sleep, catch the plane (I love 757s) and plenty of time to spare at JFK. Arrive home and I've earned gold status. Sweet. That's teamwork by way of sharing of information and that's what AFF community is all about.

Next time plan it out of Honolulu and head across and south!

Next time you'll be going for platts!!

Oh goody! I needed a good reason to travel in 2013 - and once you have the best you can't go back. Flying with other carriers to get the SCs, anyone would think Qantas does not want us to fly with them (just the minimum 4 flights). Would seem so especially when i forked out paying $4k for a lousy 280 SC on QF PE fare seems a complete waste, so will put that one down to experience and learn from it. Honolulu stopover it is!
