Noticed this on bestflights.com.au this morning:

* American Airlines Super Quick Sale to San Jose via Tokyo....Feb-Apr05
Price: From $799 return plus taxes (to be paid by 28/02/05)

By registering with the Platinum challenge desk, and leaving from Melbourne, these flights alone (MEL-NRT-SJC) return would generate enough miles to "win" the AA platinum challenge (10,214 miles via http://gc.kls2.com/) and gain access to the QP :D and AA platinum status. Of course you'd have to check what class of ticket and earning rate, but even @ AA's heavily discounted ticket 50% rate you'd still do it. Thoughts?

Extra information:

* Feb '05 - April '05 departures
* Travel completion by May '05
* 1 Tokyo stop-over allowed
* 5 night min. stay (1 month max.)

I think you might need to re-tink this theory. The QF flights are booked in K and the AA flights on O class. So the AA flights don't earn AA elite Qualifying Miles or QF FF points. AA flighst betwene North America and Europe, Asia and latin America booked in O are not eligible for Elite Status earning. See this link to the AA site (see the ** footnote on that page).

The QF flights in K will earn 100% elite qualifying miles on AA, so if you start from MEL you will just pass 10,000 elite qualifying miles upon your return to Melbourne. But starting from SYD or BNE will not be enough for the AA Plat Challenge.

NM, thanks for your reply. Is there any way to get the ticket booking classes (QF-Kclass; AA-Oclass) online? Or must you find out from the particular travel agent offering the special? I would have liked to have known this before originally posting. Cheers.

Sounds like a nice little points earner Wleong. Well done. Hope SJC wasn't too cold this time of year. Forgot the wife - forget about it :p

AA San Jose sale extended to 30/06/05 from $888 + $240 taxes. See zuji.com.au for details.

Showing not available on zuji, but bestflights have availability at $999 plus approx $300.

They also said that ex BNE, it would involve domestic BNE-SYD-BNE in K with SYD-NRT-SJC-NRT-SYD in O; would this not be sufficient for the Plat challenge?

Ekka asked: "They also said that ex BNE, it would involve domestic BNE-SYD-BNE in K with SYD-NRT-SJC-NRT-SYD in O; would this not be sufficient for the Plat challenge?"

No. Referring to NM's link above, the BNE-SYD QF flights in K would earn 100% on AA, the SYD-NRT QF flights in O would earn 50%, and the NRT-SJC AA flights in O would earn 0 points. Therefore not enough for the platinum challenge :cry: However it is ok for the "gold challenge".
