Hi All,

Sorry, I'm new here so apologies if this is something that has been posted before.

I keep seeing mention of this thing called "AA Instant Upgrade" From a bit of googling, I've worked out that is like booking an economy ticket but being given a seat in the Y class cabin. Does anyone know in terms of Qantas SC's, does it count as a business flight or an economy flight?

Thanks

It is an 'expensive' Economy ticket (Y or K Class) that gets an immediate upgrade (where available) to the next cabin.

AA does not have Business on US routes so it books into First (P Class).

The fare will earn First Status Credits for the relevant distance.

The only downside to the ticket is if you change your flight or are misconnected etc, it is only an Economy ticket (unless First class is available)

Oooo Sweet, this may be a way of getting gold cheaply. Does JQ starclass count as business?

I'm also wondering this as I am planning to book a few AA flights soon. When booking on the AA site, do u need to specify a certain ticket class (other than just economy) to get this Instant Upgrade option?

I recently missed a flight because it was cancelled due to inclement weather. I was rebooked on the next flight but Economy was the only class available. Economy SCs were added to my QFF account but I sent in the original boarding pass (booked in First) and because that was the class I was 'booked' in the SCs for First were added to my account. The operative word in the T&Cs is that 'status credits are earned for the class booked'. not necessarily flown.

Flying JQ to Honolulu and then doing Honolulu -JFK return (Twice) Would net you gold FF Status. As long as you were flying with "Instant Upgrade". This may be cheaper than buying Q Club membership :P

I think QC membership is $400-$500.

The flights may cost a little more than that.:rolleyes:

I just tried a dummy booking for mid-April next year. I chose LAX-SFO-LAX under "Full fare economy" which is described as having the instand upgrades, and it quoted me USD1225.20 for the round trip! Am I missing something, or perhaps it's just a bad time to fly?

Book the "Instant Upgrade Fares", not full economy.

These fares book into P class and earn First class SC on QFF.

The current cheapest cost for LAX-SFO-LAX is USD327 and earns 120SC for the round trip.

Note that booking FULL Y for the same journey earns 40 SC's for your USD1225 (whether you get upgraded or not).

Ah, I was looking on the US AA site, without realising it. Made things much more complicated than necessary.

Thanks, I've found the Instant Upgrade fares.

When it asks you to select a class "Economy: Business Class & Higher: First/Premium:" There seems to be no "Instant Upgrade" option. Maybe its not available.

Dede - i think you were lucky to get the extra credits.

When an instant upgrade (YUP or KUP) cannot be confirmed because of a change in flights (say because of bad weather) you can accept the offered alternative if this is in economy, OR, you can wait until the next flight when First is available.

The class you are booked in will be the class you fly. When you have an irregular flight you are then reBOOKED in economy, and that is the SCs you should receive.

The Ts and Cs you quote really refer to the situation of upgrades, where you have a base economy fare but have used points, or are otherwise upgraded to a higher cabin. Those Ts and Cs make it clear you only earn for the original cabin booked, not whatever you happen to have been upgraded to.

For the AA instant upgrade fare you have booked economy but the 'eligible booking class' (for SC earning) is A or P. BUT if A or P is not available (only happens in irregular operations, or a one class jet), then the eligible booking class becomes Y (or L sometimes for a one class jet). In that case, you have paid Y, and are seated in Y, and SCs should earn accordingly.

This is always the danger of doing a status credit run on YUPs. If you have to change a flight you could end up in economy and lose your SCs.

In general due to involuntary changes such as dede's Qantas seem quite ok to provide "Original Routing Credit" - generally all you need to show is that your were booked in P class originally.

This may be true - but as has been pointed out, this is by no means guarnateed anywhere.

Would you risk the last leg of a gold or plat SC run based on this? Personally I'd wait for the next flight in F rather than be downgraded to silver or gold for the next 12 months.

Me too, but generally in these situations, I may not have the time to do so.

I do try to book with transits of at least 2 hours, preferably 3+ (time between flights).

Hey All,

How do you actually book the instant upgrade fair when NOT in the USA? I keep getting error messages as i don't have a US billing address... On the Australian site it is MUCH more expensive.. What The ?

Help appreciated
Cheers
Carl
