I think we have already worked out you are lucky.

Didn't do anything special, just searched the AA website and booked online.
Try booking flights with US or LM these days, you're gonna need some luck there...

Understand.

Try booking BKK-ATH or SYD-BKK on AA website. You need a lot of luck on those routes. I doesn't work for me.

Some routes are harder to get. The OP was asking about SYD-LHR and I managed to find good availably from SYD/MEL and return.
Both BKK and ATH are *A hubs so I can imagine it will be hard to find flights on OW carriers and QF23 usually has poor award availability in J. Did you try CX SYD-HKG-BKK? You will need to call AA for that.

And if your dates aren't flexible you can almost forget it. If I am planning a trip I want to go on exact dates not on dates dictated by award availability.

That's not the way that award availability works though at least not the way I see it.
For me, I know that if I want to use points I have to be flexible. I have to plan my work, my leave, and my entire trip around the award availability.
If I have exact dates and have no flexibility then I buy a revenue fare.

Horses for courses I suppose but that's my view on it.

I don't disagree.

Airline award programs are not for everyone especially when it comes to buying miles to hoard. Sometimes I can find availability SYD-BKK on AA but almost never BKK-SYD as it requires an overnight connection somewhere that for some reason is not offered.

Don't have the time to keep calling to find availabilty. I have enough headaches with Qantas. I don't understand why it's so difficult to show all Oneworld award availability in all Oneworld airlines award search engines.

I don't recall an AA one and the USDM ones have been gone forever for a while (and so will USDM entirely within a month or so!).
