AA Double Points (Untargeted) Promo

Well I just received some great news from AA in the form of an email targeting my AAdvantage account for double miles for AA flights taken between May 15th and November 15th. Since my Candy Theft process begins this week and I have 5 AA flights totalling 9104 flown miles. I am not sure what they will double - base miles flown, miles earned including cabin bonus etc, but either way, its going to add at least 9104 miles to my account, which is almost half a return flight to NZ. So after one trip I will be 10% of the way to AA Lifetime Gold status, and will have enough miles in my account for 5 return trips anywhere in/between Australia and NZ - not a bad deal especially since those reward flights do not have Fuel fines attached.

Has anyone else been targeted for this Double Miles promotion? Mini NM#1 (who has an AA account with 1000 miles in it from a single BNE-CBR-BNE trip with his school) also received the email for this promotion.

Unfortunately its only AA flights that count to the double miles, so my QF, BA and CX flights won't help.

NM that sounds similar to one of the 25th anniversary deals. The 25th anniversary deal requires purchase through www.aa.com between May 21st and 31st for travel in the dates you mention. The double miles refers to a bonus of 1 times base miles (or minimum if that applies). Code DBL06

Ahh, looks like my DONE4 may not be eligible per these terms and conditions:

Obviously my flights are not booked on-line at AA.com . Oh well.

I'm trying to decide what to do about the promo myself.

I dont have AA and not intending to go for AA status in the near future (unless QFF further gutted beyond salvage).

I do have a trip later in the year that is not yet booked that would qualify. But if I open an AA account and credit this trip then I end up with fragmented miles. Hmmm would be about 10,000 flown miles in "A" so times 1.5 (I think) + 1 bonus = 25,000 miles. What would this get me on AA?

Vs on QFF 2.25 = 22,500 miles and a lot of SCs (so a little bit closer to lifetime status).

What do you think?

It's a no-brainer with that one: 20K AA miles will get you a return journey, AKL-PER-AKL in WHY! ("Wholly Within Listed Countries †")

You can't even get return AKL-<east coast Oz>-AKL with 22½K QFF points.

Also, if you succeed with an AA Platinum challenge, you will earn more than 25K miles. 35K AA Miles will get you to PER and back in the pointy end of the aeroplanes.

†Travel between Australia and New Zealand may use the 'Wholly Within' one country award.

I think this is a targeted promo, so if you don't already have an account and received the email, then you may not get the bonus miles? If you have an account and accruing to AA anyway, then registering can't hurt.

I received the email as well†. The T&C's do not indicate it as being targeted. As NM posted there's no harm in setting it up.

†(I use an AAdvantage account to handle my DONE4's AA flights [Check/Select seats etc.] This is done as the sabre RECLOC is registed against my AAdvantage number, while the flights aren't)

I have signed up for AAdvantage. There seems to be a bonus offering related to AA email coming up tonight, so I ticked receive email comms etc just in case

I need to decide on the trip within the next week. My plan wasn't to purchase this early but the extra award value is tempting.

I also got the email. My AA account is several years old, and has never had a single point credited to it. In fact, I thought I had cancelled it...

Oops a couple of mistakes. QFF earning would also be 2.5. And I found a longer routing for the same fare, so 13,000 flown miles = 32,500 on either AA or QF (and 480 SCs if to QF).

Edited to add, AA has online booking bonus so that would be 33,500 (+ a bit more since I rounded the distance down). Looking very close to that free business class NZ-AU award.

Kiwi Flyer, Your stated 1.5Q points per mile indicates the fare is a high earner. This means that if you were on a Platinum challenge, you would achieve it during your 6,667th Mile. You would would get double miles for the sector that occurred on as well as the remaining segments. (A minimum of 6,333).

You are now up to 41,000+ miles. :shock:

If you give your precise routing the number of AA points can be calculated from a CT challenge

Starting with the flight on which you will complete 6667 flown miles, you will be earning 2.5 AA miles per flown mile in A

The 1st miles will only earn 1.5.

If your 1st sector was something like SYD-LAX, then that flight alone would complete the challenge and you would earn 2.5 miles per flown mile for the whole itinery ( same as you would have done on QF as Platinum , the only difference being that the miles have a higher value )

Also, for every 10,000 flown miles you can get another 2,000 bonus miles by converting your AA electronic upgrade credits to miles, which makes the AA earning potential higher than for QF. Post your itinery and I'll let ya know the comparison between earning to AA vs QF

also, for this year only, if you manage to attain 75,000-99,999 qualifying points or qualifying miles, then you will also be entitled to another 10,000 bonus miles. Attain 125,000+ qpoints/miles and you'll earn either 2 additional systemwide upgrades or 20,000 miles

Now to consider the value of the miles earned. 17,000 AA is 10.625% of the requirement for a 1st return to Europe whilst 16,000 QF is only 4.167% of the requirement. Also, if you are using CX in your trip, you will still get the 100% status bonus when crediting to AA

Thanks. I will be flying AA only (I guess there could be some American Eagle included).

Since I don't intend having AAdvantage as my primary OW FFP in the near future, unless circumstances change or further devaluations, I don't think long haul rewards are relevant to me.

On this trip alone it seems I won't have enough to complete a platinum challenge, so unless I credit other trips to AAdvantage instead of QFF, I wont have the benefit of adding to those miles at a decent rate (no status bonus and no DBL06 bonus).

So it makes sense to me to consider awards trans-tasman. AA almost gets me an economy round trip, so it is worth considering further but not the slam dunk it appeared to be when I had the trip mileage wrong.

This is a big help to me as I have 10,387 miles on CX on my DONE4. If booking to QF, I would have used the AA codeshare on the trans-Pacific, but I do prefer to be on the operating airline's code whenever I can.

You already have top tier status on OneWorld and Star Alliance.

I am not sure whether you redeem award flights but as you mentioned on an earlier post you calculated that you are not likely to gain very much, if anything at all, by changing to AA.

Well, I still think you'd be well off crediting your trips to AA for the significantly higher value that AA points have; just booked parent a LHR-Oz r/t for december in 1st class for 160,000 points plus GBP90 ( AUD224 ) from an AA account
