So you had to go the the (North Sydney?) AA office in person.... that's quite a hassle. I wonder if I could do this over the phone if necessary. Did they accept your CC then?

No. AA has an ticketing office in AKL. I had the choice of faxing in same as NM or visiting the office. In this case it was more convenient to go to the office (took about the same amount of time plus I collected paper tickets directly without waiting for them to be mailed).

With Sydney's office closing I should probably check whether Auckland office is also closing. I haven't heard anything. It is in the same office as Qantas.

I learnt a tidbit which comes in useful. The website will happily process NZ or AU credit cards as long as the $ for the ticket is under some amount - above this AA does a credit check which is why my purchase went in limbo.

Now I know from previous dealings that the local ticket office has to sight the card for purchases over NZ$1000 so my guess is the website has a US$500 or so limit before doing the extra checks.

This explains why some past purchases on the website went through fine and this particular one didn't.

Hi Kiwi,
Out of interest, was the one that didnt go through, purchased with a credit card that hadn't been used on AA.com before.

I just purchased 2 tickets on AA. Both for around US$1200 each. The one Aussie CC I used before went though within 1 hour, the second one, a different Aussie CC not used before on AA took about 17 hours.

Both tickets purchased with 2 minutes of each other.

Nope. Same CC had been successfully used for cheaper AA booking only a month or two prior.

Well, there goes that theory.....

The only thing I did notice was AA did a double authorisation, so they might have taken extra time to sort this out, in my situation.
