Buried in the press release announcing that the first A380 would be name Nancy-Bird Walton was some of the other names that would be used:

Mr Dixon said the entire Qantas A380 fleet would be named after Australian aviation pioneers, including Charles Kingsford Smith, Reg Ansett, Hudson Fysh, Bert Hinkler, and the inventor of the Black Box Flight Recorder, David Warren. The full list of names would be announced on Qantas' 88th birthday on 16 November 2008.

Interesting that Reg Ansett would be in there!

Why didn't Brian Grey (Compass) and Paul Stoddart (Oz Jet) get a guernsey ??? They contributed to Australian aviation ... sort of ...

I guess compass and oz jet tried to compete with Qantas.

Whereas, if you believe wikipedia, Reg actively worked to support a 2 airline policy that lead to qantas being in such a good position following the collaspe of ansett.
