Hi all, I am plannng a USA trip using points in Jan next year, and wondered whether people recommend travelling in F on an A380 or J on a 787. Specifically I am interested in thoughts on the onboard product.
Does the menu, extra space, experience, etc of the older plane beat being in a lower class cabin on the newer plane?

Obviously availability may be a deciding factor in what I choose, but I am happy to connect from MEL to any east coast city to start, and end in SFO or LAX.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

If points are no issue, then yes A380 F is more enjoyable than 787 J.

Food is marginally better in A380 F.
Extra space is very noticeable in A380 F.
Bedding/sleep quality is much better in A380 F.
IFE is better in 787 J.
Service didn't strike me as miles better in A380 F but this is going to vary by crew.

Do you hold QF Platinum or OWE status? If not you should factor in first class lounge access also.

Personally I'd take the 787 in J.
The extra points/taxes are not worth the outdated F product IMO.

What about considering other OW airlines, especially if you don't mind going the long way? Ie, QR, CX or JL?

Thanks, this is very helpful. Points are not an issue, and taxes are similar on either one. I have no status and am definitely factoring F lounge as a plus in favour of the A380.

Go EK F via DXB!

Planning to come home this way from the US east coast, pending availability. Last year I was booked on Emirates F and missed it due to sleeping in after a late night at a football game. This time will book a later flight or sleep at airport if I need to, not making the same mistake again. (I also now recommend wake up calls!)

I’d take the A380 F over 787 J. More space would be my driver.

Sleep quality way better in F than J. I hated the 787, couldn’t get the seat to recline to a comfortable position and the cubby hole for your feet made it impossible for me to sleep. I also felt I had very little space. Food was good on the 787 and service and IFE, but that’s all pretty useless if you don’t feel comfortable. I would also go EK F as the best choice. Or Qatar Qsuites.

While I'm not the biggest fan of QF F I'd take it over a 787 J any time. Seat and bed better, food and drink marginally better, cabin space and overall ambience better. I've found the IFE on the 787 to be laggy and a bit unresponsive, but limited experience. If cost isn't a factor, go F for sure.

But I'd also vote for EK F or JL F as by far and away better options if at all possible.
