A380 Domestic Run?

It's a given that the limited 747/A380 capable bays in the domestic terminals at both SYD and MEL are one of the reasons they won't fly domestic legs with pax.

And if you do the SYD-MEL flights via the international terminal, it's probably just more trouble that it's worth. SYD currently only has 1 A380 bay? So scheduling would have to ensure no clash with SQ A380's.

I reckon they'd struggle to serve a meal to 500 in 50 mins with the 'level of service' that the A380 is associated with. Some more food for thought (hehe pun intended!) Also you'd have to sell first class domestic fares. Just another hassle they probably want to avoid.

Also is the time on the ground, crew, support services, catering required and the time to load/unload the plane for a 50 minute flight.....probably all not worth it.

/shrug

Seems like a lot of reasons not to do it to me. And what would I know? :P

AFAIK there are no ICAO Class F apron bays available at any domestic apron in Australia which accomodates the wingspan of the A380 and allows the 7.5M minimum separation with adjacent aircraft, so A380 ops would require a empty gate on each side at least.

Hi,

I am quite sure they could sell this flight as a "no meal service" flight and still fill it.

I would gladly pay to fly F, with the added benefit of Flounging in SYD and MEL.;)

QF's A380s will have 450 seats, not 500. Note that this is this same number as seats as on a 2-class 743. And a typical SYD-MEL flight is just over 60 mins, so not quite so hard ;). And even easier if timed to be a snack flight rather than a meal flight.

And why would they "have to sell first class domestic fares"? They have not sold such fares for quite some time and that has not stopped them operating 3-class 744 aircraft on domestic services. Just because they have F seats does not mean they have sell F fares.

Sydney has I think 4 A380 ready gates

I notice this has been corrected by later posts, but it would be a long long walk from the QF F Lounge to the SQ A380 gate .... so on that grounds alone this wouldn't be the case.

But would make for a long announcement going through all those stragglers walking across from the lounge to the departure gate :)

57 and 24 were the first two done, 24 is not much of a walk
