Am using my complimentary upgrade for MEL-PER so am coming back in Y on the red eye, Saturday night 22 September.
What is the load usually like for the red eye on a Saturday night and what seats do people recommend choosing?
Is there a good chance the load will be light and I could grab a 4-seater all to myself? No guarantees I know, but what are people's experiences?
I REALLY want to sleep the entire flight. I know a $305 flexi fare and then upgrade using half points is an option, but I actually NEED to sleep on this flight as I have a 90 minute drive home ahead of me after landing at 5am and knowing me, in J I will stay awake and try to make the most of the hospitality.
I am not a frequent J flyer.

Oh, I just wanted to clarify that I know what everyone is thinking. 'Use the half points upgrade and sleep in J on the lay-flat seat' but as an infrequent J flyer, I just know I will be awake for the snack service and then I know I will want to be woken for the breakfast service. It will give me an hour's sleep on a 3-hour flight max.
If I am in Y, I will probably sleep gate to gate, even if it's upright, because all temptation will be removed.
Hope that makes some kind of sense.

I get what you are saying, but if you want sleep then you cannot beat the new A332 J class. You can ask the FA to not bother you during the flight, and you can sleep from gate to gate then and it will be far more comfortable than down the back. You will have had the J service experience on the way over so why not have the J sleep experience on the way back!

I know, and I am tempted.
But like an alcoholic, I have an addictive personality and I just know when I get into that J cabin at 11.45pm Perth time I will want the snack service and I will want the breakfast service. It's hard to explain. At least in Y, I will have no choice.
I don't have to be home at any particular time so maybe I can access the Lounge on arrival at 5am in MEL and rest for a bit there before driving home?
it's a strange one the PER-MEL flight. It seems so far but yet with the tailwind, it's not. I guess 90 mins quality sleep in J might be better than 3 hours cough sleep in Y after all?

I used to do it quite regularly as a student, flying Tiger!! Trust me take the cheap J class if you need the rest. You should be able to get a quality 2 hours sleep I would think, you should check to see if it is a new 332 or old one as the old ones are just recliners and you will get a better sleep on the lie-flat beds

I've done PER-BNE red eye in an 800 Y and got a remarkably good sleep.I think it really comes down to whether you can sleep on a plane at all. I can sleep on barbed wire fence but others are wide awake the whole trip......

If staying in Y, further back the better. You can always ask to move as well.
As for J, not an issue as pointed out earlier to ask not to be disturbed, you can ask them to hold breakfast as well and they will give it to you later.

I'd go J for sure, the Virgin A330 Y seats are not comfy and unless you score a free seat its pretty hard to sleep.

However it isn't the worlds most popular flight so you might luck out and get a few free seats next to you! Bit of a gamble though.
