Hi all

I wanted to share a recent positive experience with you.

We just got back from a 10 day holiday in Bangkok. I purchased tickets for 3 adults (me, my wife and my mum) and our 1 child at a pretty good discount deal from their website (approx 2K per ticket) to travel both sectors on World Traveller Plus (that's premium economy to you and me).

The outbound flight was pretty average. The extra legroom is definitely the most attractive feature of this class.

When it came to our inbound flight, we used the online check in facility and I was able to select seats for myself, my wife and our child but NOT for my mum. Her booking reference would show the flight as being "cancelled". To be honest, I suspected at this point she was in for an upgrade but without wanting to get her hopes up, I simply assured her that these glitches happen and not to worry, the flight was still scheduled.

Got to Bangkok airport and checked in using Business Class priority line and sure enough, my mum got her comp upgrade to business class and on the upper deck too. Now we were very happy about this as you can imagine. She's getting on a bit and as the flight back is the red eye, I was very pleased that she would make use of the flat bed. As for us younger folk, we still had the extra space supplied in the PE class.

So, after spending time in the lounge (QF/BA share) we headed off to board the flight. Going through the last security check just prior to boarding and after waving bye bye to Mum, the BA crew member took my son's passport aside and told us to wait. A couple of minutes later and we were the proud recipients of our new business class boarding passes.

In short, the 4 of us were effectively comp upgraded from PE to Business Class. I'm sure the flight was heavily overbooked but I'm wondering if anyone here experienced an en masse upgrade of this nature?

My hat goes off to BA in this instance. I know they get a bad rap right now due to extensive cost cutting exercises but they certainly looked after us and ensured that we'll be looking at this flight again with them in future.

That's great luck for you and your family :)
The BA Premium Economy generally gets a bad rap on here but their CW seats are excellent.
Long may your luck continue

Doesn't happen all that often, particularly with casual flyers - so well done!

How did you find the flight? Was it your first business class experience?

I am fortunate enough to hold gold status tier with Marco Polo FF program (courtesy of Platinum Amex) which also grants me One World Sapphire status. I'm wondering also if this might have some bearing.

Nevertheless, I thought it was extraordinary luck too. I've had comp upgrades before but only when I've travelled solo.

As for the BA J class experience, if it's a lie flat (and it was) seat then I'm a happy chappy. I've done J Class on most 4 star airlines and they all have the good and bad points (although they each vary on the good and the bad).

If you don't mind me asking is complimentary gold membership of the Marco Polo program available for Australian platinum Amex cards?

The flight is cancelled from March. BA will only fly LHR-SIN-SYD from that date.

Hello

It was. I received an invite sometime mid last year. I am not exactly sure if it is still available but you could check with Amex to find out.

Good luck...

My understanding is the CX offer was a once off.
Also just the Amex Charge cards
Plat got Sapphire
Centurion got Emerald.

Yes...unfortunately this is where the service was let down. The AVOD was broken and only "broadcast" entertainment was available for all PAX.

The food? Well let's just say that the self service bar which was made up of sandwiches, choccy bars, fruit and assorted crisps was better than the meals (1 x dinner and 1 x brekky). On the plus side, Taittinger Champagne was flowing and that did help to make amends.
