Hi all - just two questions about mrsimongr's AA account. We both signed up for the platinum challenge before we flew to BKK in October. I didnt see any harm in it for her - no cost and if she does fly without me next year on QF domestic at least she has good seat options and lounge access.

Two questions:

1 - Bizarrely her points did not post at all for these flights - despite the info being on teh BP. After a little back and forth with BA I have no done an online request for credit with AA. Any idea how long that could take to come through?

2 - Given her lack of travel and we want to book a RTW in J for her with me for next October so want to book as far ahead as possible, and I am a few points short of an award I assume I can take her points off her? She should get about 14K points for the BKK trip assuming the challenge works. Is it an easy process to steal her points (given I administer her account completely - she doesnt even know her number/password :)

It depends how far short of the award miles requirement you are. AA will allow a Plat member to have a negative balance up to about 500 miles I think. I was just short of the miles I needed for my 3 x business class BNE-MEL-AKL-MEL-BNE awards, and was going to exchange some 500 mile upgrades for miles but the agent said there was no need any now I have a negative balance of a few hundred miles.

The other option is to exchange some 500 mile upgrade certs for miles. You can get 500 miles each for them. So you earn them at a rate of 4 for each 10,000 miles flown and can exchange them (4 of them) for 2000 miles. This option is not generally published, but for people resident outside the USA or those that show they always travel in paid first class on USA domestic flights, they will make the exchange upon request since you have little opportunity to use the upgrades which are limited to AA domestic flights.

Yeah - I think I will be about 21K short at 31/12. MInd you I will have by then 20 upgrade stickers so should be fine. I was just wondering as she wont have any use for the points (only will ever fly with me) whether I yoik the points off her and how hard that is to do.

I am thinking of flicking my Amex/Diners points to QF for int'l upgrades - currently sat on about 70K points in Amex/Diners

  OT: Simon, You should really try to learn to type account properly! (At least without transposing a c and an o.) ;)

Have you considered transferring the diners/amex points thru *wood then to AA points? With Diners you get 2:1 diners to SPG points but when you transfer 20K *wood points to AA you get a 5K bonus.

To answer your original question - yes mrssimongr can 'gift' some of her miles to you. You can give a maximum of 60K miles per year but with a limit of 15K per recipient (so you can get a max of 15K of her miles now). There is a 'fine' fee to pay of course for this transaction.

Fees from the website as follows:
Mileage Pricing:
#of miles cost* 1,000-5,000 $50.00
6,000-10,000 $100.00
11,000-15,000 $150.00

* Prices listed above are in U.S. dollars and do not include applicable taxes or $30 per transaction processing fee.
Please allow 7 days for the miles to post to each recipient's account.
You may transfer up to 60,000 miles and receive up to 15,000 miles per calendar year.

Yep - i am thinking what is the most effective way to get the points to AA. Diners/Amex seems wasteful and I know I will have at least 8 int'l flights on QF next year (two to LAX) that I might be keen to upgrade to F from J so the points are more useful for me to move from AMex/Diners > QF if I have enough points via other means to get the RTW for mrssimongr without stealing from Amex. I know you can transfer points within the family on QF - just wondering about AA.

OK I was being dim I should have checked out the website that explains what I can do

If you have diners points you can transfer those directly to AA at 2 diners points equal 1AA mile.I have done this online 3 times this year-am a little paranoid that they will change the rules for the million miles and lifetime gold. They have always posted within 48 hours in my AA account even though the diners website says it could take 28 days.

Simon has since edited his post. He meant to type the word account but transposed the second c and the o giving a c o c u n t whereupon the last four letters formed a string changed by the inbuilt forum censor to *'s.

If you are going to purchase points be sure to do so by 31 December since annual limit applies every calendar year. Also if haven't already done so register and play the scratch game to get a bonus 2,000 miles for 10,000 purchased.

No likelihood of buying points. WIth about 110K+ real points + 20 upgrade stickers plus mrsimongr's points + 70K amex/diners points I should be ok

The tricky thing will be working out how we can both get a F seat on the RTW - given that I will be on a DONE4 (maybe a DONE3 - need to talk to you guys re that after Xmas) and she will be on an award J (or is it C/D?) seat :/

Still no answer on average expected time for points to post after an eticket claim?

I can't answer specifically for AAdvantage, but experience with several other FFPs shows that crediting missing miles takes anywhere from minutes to couple of days for the FFP's own airline flights, to a week or two for close partners when paperwork is all good, to several weeks if there is an issue (rare).

The points have posted :D :D So she is now also platinum :D :D She wont requalify next year but at least she has the card now - just in case she flies without me next year.

Yeah - having never had a real desire to fly first, including my flight to SIN and my planned flight to LAX next year I will be flying first on 6 out of 8 flights
