lol! Reading this reminded me of being little and watching Manuel from Fawlty Towers. Great stuff :D

I recently discovered "Fawlty Towers" and I have watched it 3 times from start to finish. IT IS AMAZING!!! :D I only wish someone told me bout it sooner ..

I'm now watching "Yes, Minister" :D

Both the sitcoms were produced WAYYY before my parents even met :p It gives me a nice glimpse into how things were back in the 70s and 80s

After watching Fawlty Towers, now watching Yes, Minister - I can only say that the comedies of the past were simply superb ... especially the dialogue delivery of Sir Humphrey Appleby ... simply breathtaking!

My uncle used to work in Indian Civil Services and I asked him to watch Yes Minister .. he said that he used to watch it back in the 80s and that most of what is shown in the sitcom is strikingly similar to how civil services worked in real life ... simply astonishing ... especially the bits where there is lunch with wine (a glass or two with the cheese) OMG! .. Although the wine scenario might not have applied to in the Indian Civil Services context ... guess wine & dine was more English/Crown Civil Services? I don't think any of the workplaces of today would allow a glass of wine or two with lunch ...

The story is that both MP's and public servants used to watch "Yes Minister"

However, they laughed at different places!

I used to work in a large complex in Tuggeranong, it had a few federal government departments in buildings named A through to E. Across the road from E was F which is a Vikings sports club, it was quite common to hear people talking of meetings in building F and they weren’t talking about having shandies. :)

Also in my early days in Canberra I worked up at Russell Offices, which was then Defence hq, where there were a few military ‘messes’, even us civvies were allowed to imbibe there.

Sadly, a lot of these old classics are being redacted (a bit like me sometimes😆). One of the many that my parents didn't let me watch, was "It Aint Half Hot Mum", set in British India. Who remembers that one?

Indeed I do.
But growing up in the 50s it was the radio and the Goon show was compulsory listening. When TV came around it was Whacko with Sid James and Hancock's Half Hour.In the 60s moved on to Not Only But Also then Monty Python.Several others as well.
