Needs to fly 4 flexYs to make 90, 20x4 plys an extra 10. Will still come to a grand $ at least.

In reality, the OP could achieve 90SC in 2 flights at full J on SYD-BNE/MEL/CBR. (45SC each way) Economic? absolutely not, but it is absolutely not true that one requires 4(or more) sectors to get to 90SC. Indeed you could also get 90 from SYD with a longer return flight such as to NZ, or CNS/TSV/DRW.

The more economic solution, as discussed, is of course multiple sector runs and/or a combination of flexible Y and/or J in certain markets.
