787 fleet emergency landings and now grounded following battery fires

Re: JAL Dreamliner fire

I was replying to Samh004s comment about suggesting they keep circling until a fix could be found (to what i assumed he was alluding to the battery catching on fire issue) Which seeing it could most likely take months would probably result in every plane circling crashing into the ground after running out of fuel...

So landing seemed the better of the two options and they could do that in an ordely or disorderly fashion (if fire seem imminent) as the pilots saw fit...

Oh yes, absolutely.

Re: JAL Dreamliner fire

I'm sure you'll all be relieved to know our flight today on JAL was uninterrupted by fires or fuel leaks. I even managed to resist reaching for the Valium.

ANA grounds 787 fleet following latest emergency landing

I have just heard that an ANA 787 made an emergency landing and aircraft evacuation in Japan today following an inflight battery problem (not sure the nature of the problem). As a result they have decided to ground the 787 fleet until further notice following the recent spate of incidents with this aircraft. Not a good sign but not entirely unexpected. It will be interesting to see the response of Boeing, FAA, etc.

Re: JAL Dreamliner fire

A report on ABC radio said that ANA have grounded all of their Dreamliners !

This might finally prove even to the most die hard Boeing fan boys that maybe, just maybe, there might indeed be something more serious wrong than just a "few inital hickups which are normal with newly introduced plane types"

The marketing term "Dreamliner" might very well turn into a real world nightmare it seems... For when again is the maiden flight for the A350 scheduled?

And if it's Boeing, I ain't going hehe ;)

JAL Dreamliner fire

Read that too. Nothing to say yet that it's related to the JAL battery issue, as it was smoke in the coughpit, completely different area.

Still, not looking good for Boeing.

All Nippon Airways has grounded all 17 of its Boeing 787 jets after one Dreamliner was forced to make an emergency landing in western Japan on Wednesday.

The plane made an emergency landing in Takamatsu in western Japan after smoke appeared in the plane's coughpit, but all 137 passengers and crew members were evacuated safely, the Osaka Airport said on Wednesday.

Nothing to say the JAL battery fire midway down the aircraft has any relation to smoke in the coughpit.. Yet? Not looking good though, but in a way it's nice to see non-fatal dramas happen to both major manufacturers, so neither one is safer than the other.

Without turning this into an airliners.net Airbus vs Boeing debate...

The 787 does seem to be having some serious issues...

I am not sure I'd be wanting to fly a 787 over the next few months

The reports also say that the instruments were reporting a battery error and the battery was the same type as the JAL battery.

Not sure I am comfortable flying the 787 Full Stop.

The concern is the number of incidents with in service aircraft in a short time frame and not limited to one common factor it seems to be varied and across different aspects of the aircraft.

Brake Issues

Assembly issues

Wiring Issues

Battery Issues

etc etc

Will stick to wht has tried and tested for quite some time im thinking.

I do find it amazing though that it is not getting hammered like the A380 in the forum

The only one of these that hasn't also been an issue with the other brand is that of batteries. And, of course, brand x has plenty of its own personal issues.

What will be interesting is the reaction of the authorities. The 787 is the first twin to be given very lengthy ETOPs approval (330 minutes I think) from new. These battery issues are exactly the sort of thing that makes ETOPs of any sort questionable, and perhaps opens up questions as to why the aircraft wasn't given restricted ETOPs until it had some form of service record. 5 hours from nowhere with a high energy lithium battery fire would just about be the worst scenario imaginable.

Of course, we'll only have to wait a few years until Airbus issue us with a whole new can of worms with the 350. Makes you really long for old machinery like the 767...

The FAA just grounded United's 787s as well.
