Hi all,

I notice that to some European destinations such as DME and FCO, CX flies a 343.
And I noticed that the 343 J is different to the 77W J and looks somewhat like ACs 763 J seat.

My question is what are the main differences between the two J products and how do they stack up against each other ie. which is better and why.

Thanks

CX's A340 fleet has the old J class seating (and the old non-reclining Y class shell seats!).

The old seats have higher walls, feel narrower and more enclosed, and face towards the aisles. Makes it a bit awkward to look out the window.

Oh no they're the "coffins" aren't they :(
I thought CX got rid of these years ago

C'mon, they're not that bad! Yeah, not as good as the most recent product, but it's still lie-flat J.

Long haul in the Y shell seats on the other hand... (the longest flight I had in those was HKG-KUL in a 744, and that was more than long enough).

Avoid the a340! Standard herringbone where your feet point in the aisle and its tricky to look out the window.

77x is reverse herringbone where feet face toward the window and looking out is easy. This seat is similar to BA first class.

Seriously reverse herringbone is the best biz seat in the sky right now.

i quite like J on the 343 - the right side aisle has no one facing you and is quite private. i recline to fully flat and lounge sideways or on my front to look out the window

the 343 will not be upgraded to new J as they will leave the fleet soonish

Just like to reactivate this thread tangentially, if I may.

77W vs 773 (J)

I am thinking of doing a red-eye HKG NRT but the only config on offer is the CX524 (773) where EF tells me it is not the herringbone setup and the CX website tells me it is angled flat.

Am I correct in saying that only the 77W has the herringbone and it won't be found on the regional routes ?

If so, Probably I won't consider the red eye then.

Thanks

the CX website would be misleading if they are saying the regional seats are angled flat! they're not, in any shape or form. They are just recliners, in a fixed shell.

The 77W with herringbone can be found on several regional routes, along with A330s (herringbone) and even 747s. But the problem is aircraft substitution. These are long haulers that can arrive late, or be needed for somewhere else, and so you could end up with a sub. Chances of that happening? Maybe 20%? Maybe a bit less, and it depends on the route.

77Ws and 747s may also offer F, depending on the route.

If you fly to HND rather than NRT you'll get at least one flight with guaranteed F (and correspondingly, guaranteed flat beds in business). The HND flight is pretty much protected against substitutions.

If I were to do the red-eye, I'd make sure it has the J flat bed [as you say, look for config with F seats].

So far, it isn't there - only on daytime flights.

I guess we are spoilt - truly flat vs angle flat etc...

Thanks

looks like JAL is also only offering day time flights with their full flat bed product. Interesting choice that the red-eye gets standard seating.

Just to be clear about the angled-flat... regional business class seats are just standard seats. With a bit more legroom than you would find on a QF 737 for example, or domestic USA F class.

Asking about the seats on CX 161 HKK - SYD - listed as 333 but with 3 different versions on Cx website.
Just want to make sure it's 180 degree fully flat for an overnight flight!!
Thanks

all cx services between HKG and Australia are full flat, reverse herringbone (1-2-1 configuration)

I find them very comfortable .....

they were god bless 'em.

they had deep padding (sadly lacking on the new seats) making for a comfortable ride. Yeah the layout wasn't the best, and they were a bit squished, but still 5 years (or more) ahead of the QF offering with its Mark1 skybeds.
