Hi everyone

I'm booking a Classic Award for Christmas time (ASA too expensive) and am flying SYD-LAX-SFO return leaving 16th Dec returning 13th Jan. I wanted to fly Prem Economy in one direction, and the only prem econ award availabale is LAX-SYD on the return. But here is the thing - it is on the 747.

So from your experience - does the A380 offer a much better premium economy service? The Qantas website seems to sell it that way, but I would like to hear the opinion of my fellow travelers :) There are no A380 prem econ seats available, but I don't want to waste the points on the 747 if it is not worth it.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Hi everyone

Somewhat puzzled by that statement:

Classic 72K + $386 USD
PE ASA 72K + $503 USD

So for $117 your getting 13110 points and 90 SC???

Going over is interesting in Y if you exclude SFO and make LAX your destination:

Classic Y 48000 + $456
YASA 36000 + $647

So a YASA uses 12000 less points, earns 11347 points and 45SC, on other words for $194 you are seeing a points differential of 23000 and 45sc ;)

All up your spending around $500 (including AA LAX-SFO for $99 each way) for 36500 odd points and 155 SC?

Looks like I still have a lot to learn on finding awards. I was putting in a return journey and did not try booking as two one way fares. I had selected classic award going Y on way out and PE return and that was around 120K plus $850 classic. ASA was coming in at over 400K for the same journey - but again, that was not looking at two one way fares.

I've found that 72K plus $503 from LAX to SYD PE :)

You have made my day.

Just a quick thought on the above though, if I book the LAX/SFO legs separately by AA, that means I will only get the one piece of luggage right? Whereas if it was all the sam booking I would get 2 x pieces?

also with ASA make sure you only book QF operated flights, so if you go to SFO you can only get a cheap ASA to LAX and then you can book either a classic award to SFO or a cheap paid ticket. I love looking for flights and finding the little gems out there :D

The only thing I am confused about is you have said all up I would be spending $500 inc LAX/SYD for $99 each way. By my calculations all up I am spending $1350 ($647 ASA SYD-LAX, $200 LAX-SFO rtn, $500 USD LAX-SYD PE)

You are spending $500 more than using a classic alternative, which also has taxes to be paid, so that is the difference and the true cost of the points/ SC earned.

The only thing about the 747 PE, is it's a bit noisier that the 380. Otherwise the 747 is fine. I'd still pick the 380 given the choice.

I also remember reading somewhere on the AA site that if you are travelling onward from an international flight with a partner airline you get the luggage allowance.
We are doing this from DFW to New Orleans.

I'll see if I can find the reference.

EDIT:
Ok, it doesn't actually say partner. But it doesn't exclude them. I would try it on at the check in for the domestic leg. You need to do the domestic leg within 24 hours of the international.

I tried it on with them and gave them a call. If you are on AA paper but a codeshare airline flight then it is free. Otherwise it is still cheap anyway - $25 USD for first piece and $35 for second.

Thanks for the info on the 747, I don't mind a little noisier. I would prefer PE on A380 but no seats available :)

Aaah I see what you mean. Thanks for all your help - I have booked those flights :)

Doesnt QF Silver (OWR) get 2 free bags on AA? Or am I missing something
