747-8F is here. Will the passenger variant ever be built?

Looks great in that colour shceme - I think i actually prefer it to all the blue of the dreamliner-style scheme.

It was still largely green (and incomplete!) when we saw it on the Boeing factory tour earlier this year..

I thought it looked good THEN!

That is a great paint job though!

As far as I was aware they are planning on building the passenger version, unless anyone else have heard any different.

I'm really happy they've brought out this new version, its still my favorite aircraft and at least it a B one not an A one.

But I think the only customer for it is Lufthansa.

Yes I believe LH has 20+20 for the Intercontinental version. No one else.

Can't wait to see her fly.

Looks awesome, what a great aircraft the 747 is :) Will they build the passenger version? I think these would have suited QF well.

Hope they build the pass version, despite its aging design I much prefer it over over the A380.

And yes, it would have been more suitable for QF considering they run 747s on all their long routes aready.

Perhaps the French feme Airbus salesgirl is a better seller than podgey guys in 3 piece suits.

I've seen the wrong asset bought before because of it.

I would have thought there'd have been much more interest in it than their is. After all, a lot of airlines have huge investments in support hardware and training for 747s already, you would think there would be a massive cost saving in continuing with an upgradge on the existing tech.

I believe the new coughpit is more in keeping with the 787, itself an exptension of the 777, rather than being based off the 744. So "commonality" with the 744 is not a huge factor.

I too am surprised few airlines have bought the 747-8i (vs the F version).

I actually believe the entire aircraft is more closely related to the 787 rather than the 744. I do believe that the commonality between the 744 and the 748 ends after looking at the top deck, the width (10 abreast) and the 4 engines...

Whilst they have been sticking with traditional design techniques for the 748, they have still based a lot of the design from the 787...

Also like others, yes the A380 is nice, but it's not a 747 replacement... I do hope that other airlines fly the 748, as I'd hate to see the 747's leave the sky's...

I don't believe that Qantas have ordered enough A380's to replace it's current 747 fleet. It is still an open question as to what will replace a big chunk of the fleet.

QF have ordered 20 A380's with 4 delivered, they have 22 B747's. That said they are also using A330's and B767's (and in one case a B737) to replace routes which have previously used the B747...

They have more than 22 747's.

Going forward, I think they will need something smaller than a A380, but bigger than the A330.

28 active 747's I'm pretty sure, with one retirement next month - means 27 in service come 2010.

Gee I hope the thing they rolled out is more than the Papier mache model that the first 787 rolled out turned out to be

It's called a 777-300ER.
I would rather believe it to be the 748 thanks and believe that as more likely as the whole scenario would probably be cheaper and more efficient. ;)

The extra 100 pax and/or 95,000lb cargo weight with a slightly faster cruise is useful also.

The 747ER's are fairly new in the scheme of things, so it may be a little down the track before they have to replace them. Will depend a bit on what the makers are spruiking at the time.
