I flew malay air because of ticket avaialblitty, I avoided LHR because of high taxes, and ended up with $1100so It wasnt surpring of the amount, but I did feel pretty silly

There are other options... Finnair for example. Low(er) fees and charges. Fly ex Asia and use EK to get to the connecting point (SIN/BKK etc). AY generally has some good availability.
