"FIVE thousand Jetstar passengers are being told their budget-priced holidays to Malaysia are off.

The airline blames skyrocketing fuel prices for cancelling the heavily promoted, three-times-a-week Sydney to Kuala Lumpur service.

Staff are telephoning 5000 passengers who have booked for travel after the September cut-off date. Many had taken up the $50 fare offer, which, with taxes, amounted to about $500 - about half the usual fare."

5000 budget tickets axed as fuel soars - National - smh.com.au

I''m booked on these sale fares...should be interesting times.

I booked SYD=>KUL for 21 dec, Xmas peak period,
I was given the option of full refund + $50 voucher (not taking it)...
or a SYD=>SIN via DRW flight free change, but have to make my
own way to KUL, I guess their alternative option is much less generous
during the Xmas peak period, but they do allow date changes so I depart
on Sat 20 Dec instead and start my holiday 1 day sooner !

Who knows, may be by that time oil is $200/b and you are
lucky to have a flight.

Also mrmaxwell, I call them PROACTIVELY and I was given those options,
and I think the DRW=>SIN sector is soon running out of seats,
in that case you have to take a full refund (which is the worst outcome)....

I was scheduled to go to KUL with 3 others in Nov, we had the sale fares and paid $420 each return. We are now going to coughet for the same price. even changed the dates with no problems. It was not so much about the destination for us, we just wanted an Asian holiday at a cheap price. Good outcome for us and the airline.

From a report I've heard:

She (Jetstar spokeswoman Simone Pregellio) said passengers had been offered the choice of a full refund, an alternative trip anywhere on the Jetstar network or a more convoluted trip to Kuala Lumpur via Singapore.

is not correct. At least one person was called by Jetstar and basically told their option was a refund only, plus a small JQ voucher. (Unless she meant Jetstar use a system similar to "alternative drop" at functions. Person 1 is offered a refund, Person 2 is offered an alternative trip and person 3 is offered the SIN-KUL trip.)

You're not the only one who will be affected by the cancellation from here: Batesy also has tickets in November, http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/com...n/how-bad-is-ta-opinion-13451.html#post174385 , and I'm sure someone else posted here a similar story about having to negotiate to get there, but I can't find the post at the moment.

Good old Jetstar spin!

I managed to get SYD-BKK return instead which saves me the Air Asia fare and is the best outcome for me.

I did have to escalate though and speak to a manager - at first my only option was refund. I wonder how many little old ladies they get on this? I'm sick of the way companies are treating people these days trying to ensure the company comes first.

Got mine sorted and happy with the outcome now Mal!! My issue was always that JQ were not on the front foot with contacting me with options.

$420 return is definitely cheap, we bought for $500 one way
but it is for Xmas, so it is a fair price.

We can't change to an alternative destination or alternative month
as it is part of our annual xmas/ny holiday.

For us even if they gave us free connection from SIN=>KUL
we would have to wait for the next day, in this case we just start
our holiday sooner and catch the coach up to KL the next day....

It's about time the ACCC and Dept. of Fair Trading people became a bit more proactive. Withthe proliferation of LCC's and consumers being shafted left/right and centre, it's about time these authorities dedicated some real resources to pursuing these crooks that will happily screw consumers unless forced otherwise.

I think the ACCC have limited powers because I am sure that JS have these
covered under their T&C, the question is then whether I can claim these under travel insurance, for example, the alternative for SYD=>KUL is then
with Malaysian airlines, but if I have to pay $600 more for it can I make a claim ? I am just too lazy to ask...

I think the problem is that the LCC's try to behind the T&C's, but there are protections for consumers the the Trade Practices Act that they cannot get around. Problem is, we may not not how things stand until such a time as they do get taken on, but after buying a ticket I would have thought that they have a contractual obligation to get you there.

That's why JQ has this on the first page of the booking process,

"To the extent permitted by law". In a case of breaking a contract, I understand that the wronged party does have the ability to recover the costs caused by that wrong. The relevant consumer agency in each of the states should be able to advise on this

FL360,

This (or similar) clause is in place for all carriers. Don't just single out JQ :!:

....and if you still want to go to KL, Air Asia have relatively cheap direct airfares from coughet:p

JQ the airline of the future. An absolute joke and nothing more.

So the problem is rising fuel costs and the airlines again have get out clauses to minimise the damage caused to them.

What about damage caused to the customer? Who cares? I wonder what would happen if I booked a non-refundable ticket for 3 months time and then could not make it due to sickness or missed the flight? What are my get out clauses? None.

The airlines have it way too easy. Companies have it way too easy. There is no justification in the way they mistreat customers and provide poor customer service.

Yes but it is very specific in mentioning meeting flight times and dates. It does not say if flights are cancelled they have no obligation to actually get you there. Although taken to the ultimate degree they could offer in the KL example, a flight 12 months later, and I guess they're still getting you there.

Really though people can sit and whinge and moan as much as they like, unless there is a significant shift in attitude which means people deliberately boycott Jetstar (and it's parent) they will and can get away with what they like. And that ain't going to happen (the boycotts) because many people aren't going to pay significantly extra to fly with competitors.

Looking back at my posts here today it may appear that I’m defending JQ.

Believe me when I say I’M NOT defending Jet Star :!:

I’ve only travelled 4 flights on JQ and the in-flight experience of 3 of flights was very good and the other was acceptable. Having exit row seats made things much better for the 3 good flights. The problem with the 4th was leg room as we chose not to have exit row seats for the right reasons but it backfired.

All I’m saying is that people need to form their own opinions based upon the information they have and their own experiences, but in doing so it’s only reasonable that they look at all sides of the various arguments. (+v’s and –v’s) Just because you have had a particularly good or bad experience does not mean the next person will do so.

About the terms I quoted I was just trying to stay in context...

As for the best way to help yourself against cancellations,

In Europe I remember someone mentioned that if that flight is
so important to them and RyanAir and EasyJet flights are so cheap
they would actually buy two tickets... on the same day...

I did get Luton => Rome flights with RyanAir for 25 pounds some while ago...
