decided to suck it up and clock 4 flights in Feb between LAX and JFK. Has anyone done this ? what would be the most efficient itinerary ?

Fast? Yes!

Cheap? No.

You need to look at alternative ports, perhaps LAS and PHL etc. and maybe with connections via DFW/ORD/PHX/CLT for cheap.
