3rd Airport proposed for Melbourne's Outer South East

This "proposal" keeps getting air time every couple of months in Melbourne newspapers.

Honestly, at the cost, they'd be better investing in better surface transport to MEL and AVV (hello, train to MEL) than have more noise issues over yet another part of greater Melbourne.

This - while AVV only has 5 flights per day there is no need for a 3rd Melbourne airport.

The public want a light rail to MEL well before they want a 3rd airport hours from the CBD.

Any rail.......

Not so sure those living in the East would agree, especially in Gippsland etc given the Victorian Governments woeful attitude to intrastate air services over the past three decades.

Never going to happen

AVV is struggling as it is

I agree it will probably not happen, but the reason AVV is struggling is that most people in the greater Melb can get to MEL quicker than to AVV. I'm in the SE suburbs and it takes me about an hour to MEL or 90 mins to AVV. There is an obvious unmet need for an airport in the SE suburbs as it would become the closest airport for most people. But as I said, I agree it won't happen!

This plan looks ~40 years ahead, and takes into account a projected MEL population of between 6.5 and 8 million by that time, depending on who you listen to.
Not sure how anyone can definitively state MEL will not need an airport located in SE area at that time.
This is what planning is all about, and the (non) second airport in Sydney is a (not so) shining example of what a lack of foresight (not to mention political will and fortitude) leads to.
Given the population growth in MEL's SE in recent times an airport that side of town would seem to make perfect sense now, let alone in 40 years time.
As far as a rail link to Tulla goes, white elephant right now AFAIAC, but in 20, 30, 40 years? Who knows? (Certainly not me).

When that do decide to build the rail link, the stations are ready to go at Tulla, that's forward planning,

Simo, it's five 'mainline' regular public transport flights each way a day at AVV: 4 x JQ SYD - AVV - SYD and 1 x JQ BNE - AVV - SYD.

There are also occasional QF transfers for planes undergoing maintenance (although AVV has already and is highly likely to continue to wind down in favour of BNE).

Avalon can have up to 50 movements a day, its a very important resource for airline circuit training at times and the only real one in Australia for such use, that's not going away.
