What's the sales pattern like?

I want a one-way on 23/6, currently quoting HKD$1,169 for the 2.15pm service.

Are they likely to have any sales cheaper than that soon? Also I gather QF lounge will be open for that service since AA HKG-DFW will have started by then?

Also is there a way to skip the horrendous check-in lines - e.g. online bag drop?

sales patterns are perpetual - they struggle to fill this route, CX and SQ match them roughly (eg CX V class return for 2300HKD all in)

typically if you see the base above 400HKD then it means the flight will be busy and its unlikely to fall, can you price beat Tiger?

fingers crossed on QF lounge although i wouldnt put it past AA to lob passengers to Plaza...

I would take MH for $1225, Tiger have Thursday sales worth keeping an eye on, although they only have three services a day ex HKG re pricebeat.

I can spend 17,000 UA miles plus US$15 in taxes to take the direct UA flight at 8pm or a TG flight via BKK.

MH with an extra couple of hours connection thrown in over 3K direct?

the UA flight timing is late night I believe, last time I took it it was an old Air Micronesia 737!

Lots more SCs and points though, and lounge access and baggage and food. 3K is fine for 1-2 hours but thats my limit.

At this price point, even if they are launching a sale, it's unlikely this specific flight would be available at sales price. The plus bundle can be good value though.

To skip the check-in line, you will need to use the airport express train and do in-town check-in. Usually, there are minimal lines there, and you can do it any time on the same day so you can maximise your air-side time, if that floats your boat.

If you don't mind a later arrival, you can also try MH as mentioned. As a WP, you can have your dining fix from 6pm at the MH KUL satellite lounge, although keep in mind you'll need to take the APM back to the main terminal for the flight to SIN.

Most of the 3K flights I've been on between SIN/HKG get quite full, although the last SIN-HKG flight I was on last week had a load of 72.2%, plus about 12 people no-show. This is despite having cut from 3 to 2 flights daily.

Also, keep in mind that you'll board/deboard via stairs in HKG. You then board a bus that takes you to the main terminal. Although if the airport is extremely congested, or if there are other operational issues, you might be lucky enough to use the satellite gates.

If you're going to use the QF lounge, when you get out of the front doors, use the first set of elevators you see, and go to level 4 (bottom level that can be accessed). You'll be in the general area for the boarding gate as soon as you step out of the lift.

Interestingly, Tiger uses the aerobridges just like most other airlines so it doesn't feel as cheap as nasty. They now also use T2 at SIN.

MH is actually pricing better now on 23/6 for a one-way. Economy Promo fare is available for HKD$1,225 after tax, but I can't tell what booking class it will be into so am unsure of SC earn. Business promo is available for HKD$4,106, earning 120SC = HKD$34.21/SC, i.e. A$5. So not amazing value.

If I could find out what MH fare bucket economy is in and if it earned SC I would book it.

3K including bundle and luggage is HKD$1,500, and earns 40SC.

All my MH promo fares got 0 SC... I've taken at least 6 legs in the last year.

Thats normally the case and easily checked, once you have selected the flight the next page has the fare rules, first letter is the class, and I am seeing O as in zero earn.

After you select your flights, go to the next page. There is a link for "View Fare Rules". The first letter of the fare basis is the booking class. For 6/23, the promo fare is in class O, earning absolutely zilch with QFF.

For MH, you need to go to at least class V to earn anything, which for this route, would be the Smart fare costing $2,745, and you get points at a rate of only 0.25.

Keep in mind that while normal alliance partners would codeshare with each other to help keep pax in the group, QF penalises you for doing so.

Then I guess JQ it is then. It also helps with getting the 4 ~ for the year too. I don't think MH O Class credits to BA either anyway.

Nothing wrong with 3K.

ii fly this route in 1C a few times a year to get my ~ up...

Like others said, you need to go to airport express to beat the lines...

The addition of In-Town Check-In does make it a lot easier to choose 3K from HKG now, although my house is so convenient to the direct airport bus which is cheaper than cab + train...

The QF lounge in HKG only opens at 3pm at this stage, I found that out the hard way when flying 3K out of HKG to SIN after a 2pm departure

That will remain true for only a couple of weeks - until AA starts their DFW-HKG service.

Just got the news that AA will be using the Plaza Premium lounge out at gate 40... doesn't look too good for the QF lounge to open early. :(
