No I'm not filming a doco. Just would rather save my last few hundred USD for the next trip. I have slept in LAS for 9 hours before.. Which wasn't too bad.. ;) Planning to go for a walk outside the airport complex and head to westchester.. Anyway see how we go i might book something last minute.. Will keep you posted on what i decide.

Presumably you'll have to wait until the clock ticks over midnight to access the lounge same day for your flight assuming it's open 24 hours.

Note that if arriving into LAX at 1:30pm on Wednesday, you will not be able to check-in for your late night QF departure the following day until the QF check-in desks open at TBIT at around 8:30pm on Thursday. So you will be stuck land-side, with no lounge access, for about 30 of those hours. QF check-in will not accept your bags the previous day and the check-in is only open about 3 hours before departure.

I would be finding a cheap hotel for the night, then spend Thursday at a theme park (leaving bags at the hotel after check-out) and back to the airport around 8:30pm (or later if the theme park is open later) for dinner/shower at the lounge before the flight.

As NM said you can't checkin your luggage/snowboard until the evening of your flight. All the Reno at TBIT is after security. TBIT landside remains unrenovated.. The departures hall food court which used to be upstairs landside is now closed. There are coffee shops in the arrivals area. But they probably close after midnight. You wont be able to get into FLounge without boarding pass, so between 1330 hrs and 1930 hrs the next day you will be landside with your luggage and snowboard.

In departures area they deliberately have no seats to stop people doing what you propose to do.

Its just a dumb idea. You will probably get harassed by security too.

If it were 10 hours then yes spending 10hours wouldn't be that big a problem but 34hours no, get the hell away from TBIT, I did like serfty's idea do a mileage run.

Find a cheap hotel near a shopping mall so that you could gumtree your purchases so your profit would pay for the hotel bill could work.

Probably? Ain't no probably about it, you WILL get harassed by security, they WILL train every video camera on the place on you, and I suspect you will probably be given a free prostate exam coupled with perhaps been told you are not allowed to fly well before the 34 hours are up.

In short, they will probably start thinking that you are scoping out the place / planning a terrorist attack since spending that long at a single airport is a very unusual thing to do. (They don't call it the LOTFAP for nothing)

Was on CX flight LAX-HKG departing around 01:30 TBIT. Looking out from the F Lounge, the main hall from after midnight was entirely empty except for the cleaners working and occasional security officers walking past. Pretty sure they will evict anyone trying to sleep there. Imagine if not, then half of LA's homeless population would probably move there.

you are completely nuts. If money is that tight, perhaps you should choose differently holiday destinations.

Best bet is to look at priceline.com or similar last minute stay websites for something in the area.

Funny thread! I say do it, document it, then report back so we can all say I told you so. :)

Spending that much time landside, you will be shoed away like the vagrant you are. If you don't want to spend money on a hotel room - catch the big blue bus to Santa Monica ($1) and hang out there. They have a good bookstore with comfy seating where you could just hang out with free wifi for a while. Later in the evening wonder around Santa Monica a bit and then catch the bus up to West Hollywood or somewhere and just hang out in a bar until the daylight greets you.

Depending on your knife skills you could also just sleep on Santa Monica Beach.

Or somebody has offered you free accommodation

@Topic: I agree, getting a cheap hotel room should be the best option, rather than sleeping landside in an airport.

Indeed, I think the airport Travelodge is about $55, has free wifi, a pool and there is a bar next door.

I haven't departed from the *new* TBIT, only arrived there however there was certainly no wow factor. I did notice that the floor has a sparkle to it like caesarstone benchtops. You now do the initial CBP thing of being fingerprinted & having your passport stamped upstairs before you proceed down the escalators to baggage claim.

LAX is still LAX - like lipstick on a pig really.

If it was just a few hours that didn't justify the cost of a hotel room I'd consider it however we're talking 34 hours so I wouldn't do it particularly as you've got ski gear with you so you'd have your carry on plus snow board & checked bag(?) also which would be tricky getting through the TSA screening point. Do you really want to drag that gear into the gents with you each time?

If you want a budget type hotel I'd choose the Hacienda otherwise you can have a 24 hour stay (called the 24/24 rate) at the Sheraton Four Points LAX from the checkin time of your choice eg 1600 to 1600 or 0730 to 0730 but you must give them at least 48 hours notice & the rate has to be a minimum of USD119.00.

I would just work back from when you want to check out of the hotel which should coincide with when QF checkin will open, lounge access etc.

I know it's tempting at the time of booking to skimp on a hotel room for late checkout etc however I think on the day you'd thank yourself and be glad that you did.

There are municipal buses that you can get on to go for a ride before returning to bed down at LAX. Check this out to get out of the airport on as few $$ as possible. I think tit's the one called Flyaway. Los Angeles Public Transit | Discover Los Angeles

How about the bus to here: Jerry's Motel285 Lucas Avenue, Los Angeles, California

Not being rude, but give him a chance to do what exactly? He asked for opinions about his plan and the AFF brains trust has given them. I don't think anyone in all good conscience could say that the idea is a good one, for various reasons mentioned throughout the thread - for his own comfort or his own safety.

While not actively encouraging the idea, nobody can stop him or is trying to. The OP will do what he wants anyway. Wild and crazy kids these days, you know. NOW GET OFF MY LAWN.
