Interestingly, if you try to change an existing booking the cost remains at old rates

That is pretty much how all FF programs work.

So the question becomes is cancelling (with any fees/points loss) and making a new booking better value.

I have done this from time to time, and not just within the one program.

ie I once had booked a partner J reward to Nairobi via QFF, buta great sale came up for a partner via Velocity which saved me points and $$$ including the QFF cancellation loss and so I cancelled the QFF redemption and took up the Velocity one. PLus I got a better flight scheduled too.

A 30% discount will always be better value than paying full price, and if one has enough points to make a new booking before cancelling the old, there is zero risk - just a bit of hassle checking whether taxes have been refunded.

When Qantas ran 30% off awards to Melbourne earlier in the year I saved ~20k points doing this with 2 pax return in J. Points came back quickly but taxes took ages, as usual.

Another consideration for some may be whether existing bookings have DSC attached from the multiple promos recently. Obviously the DSC would be lost when creating a new booking - so the additional SC is effectively costing 43% more points.

Always handy when there's a reduction in points needed.

Not so handy when there's no availability, but there is for a flight when it's the second leg from a different departure point 😭

Time to cancel some AA awards and rebook with QF. Thanks for the heads up! Maybe even cancel a VA award too.

You're forgetting "taxes" aren't discounted. For my active QF bookings (trans-Tasman) "taxes" are a significant portion of total cash payment.

Just booked CBR-BME-CBR. Quite a nice discount, and all refundable.

A good opportunity when you can't fly internationally (apart from NZ).

Must have really wound back the screws on availability. Nothing on a Tuesday from Perth to Melbourne? Odd!

I just booked SYD-AKL J return, 58,000 points and $266 in tax.

There'd better be spirits by then or there will be hell to pay.

Booked BNE-SYD-PER and PER-MEL-BNE in J for Mrs DMar and I in October.

Couldn't find many widebody options direct from BNE, so happily paid the extra points to get SYD-PER on a 789 and PER-MEL on an A330.

159,600 points and $297 in taxes/fees. All refundable if anything goes pear-shaped or the PER legs get swapped out for 738s. Alas no Points Club to scoop up the SCs on offer.
