wo hoo.
I admit that this could be posted under others of the threads but I just wanted to draw everyone's attention to this particular aspect of FlyBuys. I have not read about it here before and apologies if it has been covered elsewhere

I am trying to get a photograph of my docket up so bear with me if this doesn't work just yet

In summary I used a combination of a targeted "spend $70 and get 16c a litre off petrol" with a flybuys redemption of 1000 points for an extra 10c per litre off. And it worked.

In summary this is how you might do it:

1) make sure you have at least 1000 flybuys points
2) wait for a "good" (however you define it) petrol discount offer. Activate it
3) go to the Fly buys web site and trade in 1000 points for the extra 10c
4) await the confirmatory email....mine went to spam BTW
5) shop as you would for 2) above
6) get your docket which should have the extra 10c discounted added then and there

so far as I can see with my new interest in Flybuys, after the disappointing WW efforts recently, this is one of the better uses of Fb points. 100 litres of petrol will get an EXTRA ten dollar discount for the 1000 points.

I reckon this is likely to totally remove my interest in the WW fuel offers.

Here is the email that I received

The only query I would have with the T and Cs is that it says you get 10c off PLUS minimum Coles fuel off PLUS Targeted offer amount. Unless the targeted offers wipe out the minimum offer (and I haven't looked that deeply into the T and Cs) this could be a bit misleading. It could be taken to mean that one gets the 10c plus the minimum 4c plus in this case 16c.

"Dear Newk,

The targeted offers, in your case, 16c are inclusive of the normal in store spend offer. That is, the 4 or 8 cent normal offer is in th 16c.

Thanks...I thought it might be something like that. And it does make the T and Cs a bit confusing

Umm, sorry to burst any bubbles or egoes - but surely everyone has noted that when Woolies or Coles have these sorts of fantasic 'discounts', that the price of petrol more than compensates for their 'too good to be true offers'. Look at the price of petrol at independant stations - they will often be about 14c or so a litre cheaper compared to the others. So, who is winning - none of us, really, if we play the discount game. Petrol SHOULD be about 16c a litre chepaer than it is - not just with a shopper docket.

That is definitely not true in either MEL or SYD

Simply keep the docket until the price is at or near the wholesale price, which mean waiting a week or 10 days.

That being said I don't support either Woolies or Coles petrol in 90% of cases and prefer to support anyone else!

Available from:

I paid 1.38 less 26c at a Coles Shell station. The pre discount price was marginally above Adelaide's best price at the time.

I can agree that following the fuel cycle and independent fuel prices is all part of the game

I can also accept that fuel prices MAY be too high

And I can accept that by playing this game we may ultimately contribute to the demise of independents

But you gotta accept that I played a good game today?

Given what we here in Sydney - and the rest of the country - are paying for petrol atm - someone somewhere is making a killing - and it isn't the motorist! $1.50 for petrol for most of the week: the independent down the street $1.39 all week.

see if you can find an independent petrol retailer 26c cheaper than a Coles Shell station

If you or anyone else wants to fill up at the highest point of the price cycle then, you deserve to pay the premium

AIP - Terminal Gate Prices

The wholesale petrol price is $1.40 at the moment so petrol will be priced anywhere between $1.39 and $1.65, although here in Melb they have been too scared to go over the $1.59 price point so far!

Simply wait for the cycle to drop, to about $1.40 and then use the docket, if you are so inclined.

By my calculations you need to fill up with more than 50 litres of petrol to break even on the deal. 1000 points is worth $5. A ten cent voucher for 50 litres is $5.00. It sounds like you made a large petrol purchase so it was probably worth it for you. It wouldn't be worth it for my car but might be worth it for my partner's car where we get 50-60 litres at a time. It would also mean timing the petrol cycle well and knowing exactly which voucher the extra amount was going to print on. I think I'll stick to the flybuy dollars just to play it safe. If my husband and I were going to play the multi-car plus jerry can trick, we might make some money on it and get the total up to $10 from the 10 cent part of the voucher(buy 100 litres). That would take a lot of time and effort, and with two young children to look after, it would probably be cost effective but not time effective.

I have a jerry can that I use for big fuel vouchers. Might get another 1 or 2.

I don't know where you guys buy your petrol or how you calculate the savings.

I purchased some fuel at Woolworths this weekend but also had a look at Coles.

Woolworths E10 - 153.9c, Vortex 95 - 163.9c
Coles E10 - 154.9c and did not see the regular unleaded
Caltex E10 - 149.9c, Vortex 95 - 151.9c
Independents E10 - 140.9c and regular unleaded 144.9c

Interesting difference between the Woolworths and the Caltex prices.

So in the end my 15c discount only got me marginally below the price of the independents. That is not a discount in my books....

yep, you have it. We take at least two cars for the big discounts. Sometimes three.

Oh and our children are old enough to bring a car along in the convoy :) :). Perhaps you have that to look forward to

correct. It's madness to use discount vouchers to buy expensive petrol. It's why, after reading stuff here and elsewhere, I follow petrol prices on the net and the RAA on twitter. And dare I say, my wife's intuition. It's all part of a learning experience. Plus it's a game of sorts.

Oh, and by the way, a 26c* Coles discount would have got you below the cheapest petrol you could have found otherwise? :)

I know there is much more to the decision making than that..see my earlier post.

Each to their own.

Regards

*edit to add: 25c in your case IF you used the 10c extra option and you purchased over 50 litres
