Once again excellent photos. They have brought back memories of the 1990's TV series "Wings". The opening credits show scenes shot in the same place as some of your photos.

What a spot! Pretty sure the lighthouse in your flick is the same one I'm going to post.

Before this visit I knew bugger all about Nantucket, three things really...

1. Was once the Whaling Capital of the World
2. Moby Dick
3. Very naughty limericks

The Island has worked hard to retain its place in history with one of largest collections of pre-Civil War buildings in the country, it has a very strict building code for new buildings, and real estate prices are just ridiculous.

The population is around 10,000, but that increases x 5 in the summer months .... must be an awful time to be on the island.

Main street - most of the shops could only be described as high-end.

In case some aren't aware of Nantucket, here are a few google captures to give you an idea of its size and location. The flight from Boston is less than 30mins, you can also get a ferry from Hyannis which takes just over 2 hours.

Martha's Vineyard is the bigger island closer to the mainland ..... this is where they filmed the movie Jaws, but they called it Amity, Long Island, New York.

The Island is small at around 124 km2. Believe it or not this little Island has the 2nd busiest airport in the state , after BOS. Private jets are the reason - we saw plenty parked on the tarmac, and I can only imagine what it's like in the peak summer months.

We hired a car for the day and drove a fair chunk of the island. Along the way we saw what could only be described as OTT mansions. Remember these are holiday homes - the money on this island is ridiculous!

According to google Nantucket has replaced The Hamptons as the county with the most expensive housing prices in the USA. Going from what we saw - I'd believe it.

After checking out the Town centre we hired a car and set off to explore the Island.

First stop was Sankaty Lighthouse. The lighthouse had to be relocated in 2007 due to erosion. When the lighthouse was built in 1850 it was 280 feet from the edge of the bluff, when it was moved in 2007, it was only 68 feet away.

Did you put a deposit on anything while you were there? ;)

LOL, maybe if the exchange rate wasn't such a shocker :p

Seriously, buying a holiday home doesn't appeal to us, I'd rather explore the world than plonk myself in the same chair with the same view every summer. Besides, we live a beach lifestyle everyday of the year :)

Nice place for a visit though, and Fall (Sept/Oct) is the best time to visit according to the locals we met.

Just your average airbnb McMansions ;) is there much in the way of tourist accommodation there?

Yes, there are plenty of options for every budget - from camps to high-end and everything in between.

They even have three golf courses ;) Those yanks love their golf! We drove through Sankaty Head GC which looked a billion dollars Home - Sankaty Head Golf Club

Great photos and report!

Not kidding about that wine list. Although brilliant champagne. I wasn't aware CH had released the 2004 yet. They only release the 2005 a couple of years ago. Prior to that it was the 1995.

The 2004 Blanc des Millénaires has been available for over a year now.

Not sure about what you mean by Blanc des Millénaires 2005 - there is none AFAIK?

You're spot on. My mistake.

Not that I we live a beach lifestyle, far from it but whole heartedly agree with the explore the World sentiment. Being ex-Sunny Coasters we will after what will amount to 20-25 years in the bush eventually reside by the beach but only as a base for say 6 months a year.

After returning the car mrsamaroo hit the shops. I should have timed that better:oops:

Short taxi ride to the airport where mrsamaroo was lucky enough to jag the co-pilot seat for the flight back to BOS.

Cape Air sells 8 seats on the Cessna 402 + 1 for the pilot.

This is mrsamaroo's first (fixed wing) co-pilot gig - she loved it!

We really enjoyed our Nantucket adventure, sensational day trip, even better if you stayed for a few days. Next time.....

If you’re in Boston and looking for something to do - Nantucket would be my recommendation.

Their busiest week of the whole year is what they call The Stroll - starts the day after Thanksgiving. If you like Christmas lights, apparently it’s not to be missed!

Last night in Boston. We ate at Atlantic Fish Co, been trading since 1978. FWIW, this place was really near the site of the 2nd Boston Bomb ..... I know this as there is a memorial right out the front door.

I'd recommend this place - delicious food!

Sensational oysters - so fresh!

New England Clam Chowder - delicious, but I'm not sure about the presentation of the oyster crackers. The locals must love-'em ... 191 years is a longtime to be baking crackers.

This place knows how to cook fish. Pan Seared Sea Bass, with lobster ravioli - beautiful!

Today is a travel day - a big drive. Boston to The Point - it took us just over 6 hours. I did have plans to take a more scenic routing through Vermont and a car ferry at Burlington, however the car ferry had already closed for the season, so we decided it would be best just to get there via fastest route.

A FS Boston hearty breakfast was the priority prior to departing.

I selected a Back Bay location to collect the hire car, very easy 10 min walk from the FS. As we were picking up from Boston and returning to NYC we ended up getting a NY plated Lincoln Navigator .... this car is massive! I drive one of the largest cars you can buy in Australia, this thing made it look and feel like a Hyundai Getz.

Beautiful car!

Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jump - built for the 1980 Olympics. The small one is K90m and the other one is K120m ... assume that's the height of the tower?

The area they have to pull up on landing is absolutely tiny - crazy sport.

Real estate? Cessna?

Check cc on-line ASAP!

I've had the same crackers in my limited fine dining on the east coast. I think it's 'prestige' to serve that brand crackers, hence in their bag - otherwise 'Are these Westminster crackers?'
