2025 F1 Thread

Just watched the replay of Quali. Wow!!! Didn't have LEC on pole on my Hungarian GP bingo card! Great lap and the McLaren boys will be wondering where the pace went?

Should be an interesting race given that grid order.

Finally, LEC is making Sir HAM look pretty ordinary these days. When does HAM walk away to ‘give his seat to the really strong group of junior drivers’, as the inevitable press conference will say?
I wouldn't read too much into this just yet. HAM provided zero input into the SF-25's design and he's learning an entirely new chassis + engine combination. I'll wait to see how he fares next year after he's been able to have some influence on the vehicle design and beds in a little more into the Ferrari team before I pass judgement. No doubt HAM expected he'd be doing better this season, but if he's shown anything through his career, it's that he's a fighter who doesn't tend to give in.

Good race in the end. Nice to see varying strategies converging at the death. Well done to NOR - drove a good race to make that strategy work in the end. Great final stint from PIA, but just not quite enough laps in the end.

Shame about LEC. He was very angry about lots of "things" and I must admit to being very curious about what "those things" were? 😜

Things were plank wear according to RUS and Mercedes, had to raise tyre pressure and slow down top speed, might explain a bit about HAM too.

RUS just added a zero to his new pay.
Good result for Aston as well.

Like how NOR moved the trophies out the way before spraying champagne.

Perhaps Norris had the better strategy in the end ? Qudos to NOR for making it work. Oscar commented that the LEC early undercut was perhaps the wrong option.

An amusing comment by RUS in the cool down room, suggesting PIA should have T-boned NOR on the attempted overtake on lap 69.

Ironically it was NOR's poor start that forced him onto the (ultimately) optimum strategy. Still, had PIA been able to clear LEC in the first or second stint, I'd say he would have been favourite for the win. Also, had he been trying to pass anyone other than his own team mate for the win at the death, I reckon PIA would have made it work. Still, NOR was given a tough job to manage a one-stopper, so fair play to him for making it work.

Bit deflating in the end...Oscar didnt do anything wrong, and again points are left behind.
Agree @DejaBrew , Lando's poor start ended up with the gamble strategy that won the race.

Oscar - how about a one-stop?
Pit wall - nah, too difficult

PIA summed it up well -: NOR had nothing to lose but everything to gain.

Imagine the furore had McLaren tried and failed with that same strategy for PIA? Ultimately everyone - drivers + team - made the right calls. Turns out the strategy was marginal either way.

But that's the element of luck.

Can have all the best computers, strategists telling you that it's the best strategy, but a slight temperature change, unexpected safety car, or behaviour by a competitor can totally flip it.

That said I think Oscar went a lap early with his dive, that should have been the setup lap to be really close at the end of the lap, and bait Lando into using his energy.
But as Oscar said in the interview, equally you might not get another chance

Basically Oscar goes with the killer mentality. With only 2 laps left i think he decided to take the half chance rather than risk the no chance.

Had that been lap 65, he probably would've tried to just close and attempt the next lap, but with just one lap left he was out of time effectively.

The thing I like seeing is that he's had a couple of goes at lunge passes on NOR where he's been "out of control" (i.e. lockup / near miss), but in every case, he's been in enough control (be that good luck or good measurement) to avoid contact. Contrast that with NOR who's made one exceedingly ill-conceived lunge effort that ended in disaster for him and could easily have ended in disaster for PIA.

So PIA has that killer instinct that is audacious when it comes off, but is controlled enough - so far, at least - that he hasn't crossed over the line with his team mate or anyone else.
