2025 Amex Membership Rewards Devaluation

The Amex Platinum card is now very borderline for me. This year I have used the $450 travel credit, and saved about $550 through Amex offers. I haven't managed to use the Accor free night yet. So as things stand I'm paying an effective $400 fee for moderately better points earning than with other cards, flexibility with transfer partners (nice to have), Priority Pass (which I barely use), hotel status (which is generally not high enough to really matter) and the free Australian subscription (which I could take or leave).

I have saved money on some airfares, but they are reimbursed by my employer, so that benefit has gone to my employer rather than me personally. Also, booking flights through Amex travel has downsides - much more hassle to cancel/change, as you usually have to phone them, sometimes less flexibility, and no QBR earning.

It's still not a bad deal overall, but the Amex offers are obviously highly uncertain, and without capitalising on them, it really wouldn't make sense. I am also thinking that the same fee put to one or more other cards could generate a lot more value in the short term through bonus points. For example Qantas Titanium currently offers 150k bonus points plus a better ongoing earn rate than Amex. The downside is putting all eggs in the QF basket obviously.
it's a classic YMMV --- I get a lot of value from the card, but I always tell people who I recommend the card to, 'do your sums to check you're getting value from the perks' and if yo'ure not, then it doesn't make much sense. Yes, the Titanium only makes sense IF you're happy to be on the QFF train...

You always have a "moment" when you get these emails

Dear Sir/Madam, We regret to inform you that there have been changes to your flight SQ338, departing on XX Mar 2026 due to operational reasons. If you would like to opt for other flights, you may contact Singapore Airlines.

Luckily just a 5 min change

If you're putting work expenses on the card you could probably claim a portion of the annual fee as a tax deduction. I'm also just a guy on the internet, so do talk to an accountant for proper tax advise on this :)

I've got the original deal of $450 travel plus the $400 travel credit with the free Reserve companion card so I'll be staying on with the devaluation and (probable) increase in the card fee. The offers and credits still make it a worthy card.

Even as a payg employee and there is the alternative of a free debit card? This is new to me 🙃 although probably only 5% of my spend is work related / reimbursed.

Well that's just f*d up :-(
Unfortunately with HSBC Australia being sold this credit card would be gone soon after

There is speculation that HSBC Australia is up for sale, but when that happens, who the buyer is and what they will do with the credit card portfolio is up in the air.

If NAB buy it, they'll cough it up like they did with their Citi acquisition. Other potential buyers may keep the cards as they are.

I think earning cards now in order of priority for me

1/ Qantas ANZ Black
2/ HSBC *A
3/ QF Premier Platinum
4/ Amex Explorer

I guess the question is how much value (vs the membership fee) do I place in
. $450 travel credit
. $200 AU dining credit
. $200 int’l dining credit
. Australian and WSJ subscription
. Hilton Gold (free breakfast)
. Accor Gold & Plus (free nights and dining credits)
. FHR benefits
. Priority Pass & (esp VA lounges…)
. Hertz 5* (who cares?)
. Little dinky discount offers

With QF LTG, and Marriott Lifetime Titanium Elite (which provides UA*S), adding a *G status covers me for most flights.

And that’s before any de-valued points.

They’re marketing and pricing department is onto us!

I completely agree. Amex Platinum only makes sense if you really use all the benefits. Otherwise, $400 just goes down the drain.

They have been doing lots of surveys, I always say MR are the most important feature but obviously my opinion is less important if I don’t vote with my feet!

Is no one going to bring up the new transfer partner to woolworths everyday rewards?
Like seriously.... what.. the.. actual.. fc....
I dont think anyone who applied and hold this card wants a transfer partner to flybuys/everyday rewards.

Agree with this

Would have been palatable if they added an air Canada or us based airline but everyday rewards? Shocker!

Tbh, who ever thought about adding this should be fired! They have zero clue what this card is for.. travel card my butt

For those that have a card other than Platinum (such as Explorer or Edge) the addition of Everyday Rewards will give them a route to transfer points to QFF.

What am I even keeping the plat for them vs the explorer or QF ult? :(

Seems like this will also cannibalise their own offerings re: explorer now being a Qantas transfer partner? Unless they bump earn rate up / add multipliers on travel spend, or remove the forex fee, the plat charge is looking increasing uncompelling. I’ve submitted these suggestions to them multiple times too.

I even value some of the intangibles, but not at a 1k difference in annual fee. Intangibles such as being able to call an onshore call centre and speak to someone within 30 seconds adds value, the nature of a charge card also is valuable to me, and yeah, the metal card is actually kinda nice, but what else actually differentiates it from their own other offerings?
