2023 Soccer Women's World Cup Discussion

No complaints there. A gutsy and determined Matilda’s outplayed by a very talented England team which ruthlessly took the opportunities presented. That’s World Cup football.
I had England winning 2-1 tonight. I can’t see Spain getting close to them. England have their best attacking midfielder coming back from suspension. 3-0 England I reckon.

Channel 7 just announced they will broadcast the England Spain match at 2am Monday. ;)

England played well but I thought this was supposed to be a non contact sport. Not reffed that way tonight!

It’s never been a non-contact sport. It’s morphing in to one though with the theatrics of players and overreactions of referees. I thought the ref was pretty good.

Quite an interesting match, somewhat physical. Kerr’s long range goal was best of the match but not enough. I was a bit surprised by the last two english goals, the Tillies seemed to just go to sleep on the defence and just didn’t attack the ball holder, maybe tiredness had set in a bit. Now only two more matches to watch.:)

We played like individuals

England played triangles. (It’s a Ted Lasso reference)

We had a great individual strike goal
They had two cracker goals first and last (even if the last was a repeat of the QF goal by the same striker!)
The second goal, we had chances to clear but were not able to
On that front, our defence was “out of sorts”
Well done to the English collective

Yes England clearly the better side on the night.

They set up well to control our offensive entries that had worked well up till this game.

We kept trying the same thing, but were just constantly cut off.

Our skills seemed a little down, but that was probably in large part due to the constant English pressure.

The other thing that England did was a lot of "bending" the rules to scrag, take players physically out and timewaste. This certainly helped to give them the advantage.

The above all combined to put a handbrake on the Matilda's game.

On the Australian front tactically wise we did not seem to have employed any new tactics to counter England.

All in all England stepped their game up a notch. Whereas Australia seemed to go down a notch, and were just a bit flat on the night..

WOW what a fabulous job this FANTASTIC group of young women have done for women's sport in Australia - loved by all no doubt. 😍 👍

BUT

No doubt many would have seen the despicable footage of those braindead young males who busted down the barriers at Fed Square to burst into an already capacity precinct and then proceed to act like animals letting of flares etc forcing many family groups to flee and miss out on a once in a life time experience.

They claim to be football (soccer) lovers - yet their actions almost undo much of the good the fine young women have created.

And flares. What the heck is it with flares and soccer. Even one let off in Memoral Drive tennis courts in SA packed with people. Should throw them in jail for a bit.

Backlash from people that wanted the PH.

So, NSW Premier Minns does not have to honour his commitment to light up the Opera House if Matildas won the World Cup. Kind of a hollow offer when he should have supported the Matildas from the very start. Incidentally the World Cup is said to have contributed around $3.5b to the NSW economy.

You can only play triangle if your team has a possession-based strategy. That requires higher skill level as they control the ball much longer.

Australia is more of sit back and counter-attack against England as they have higher skill levels. Hence England has most of the possession.

We just ran out of gas as we don't have the squad depth to rotate players throughout the tournament, and that introduces errors.
