Got an email from United overnight advising that they will increase the PQP/PQF requirements to earn status in 2023 for 2024.

There are also a few other things happening from next one with United MileagePlus:
  • Eligible members who earned United status in 2022 will get an automatic PQP deposit at the start of 2023
  • From 2023, United award tickets will earn PQP and PQF. You'll get 1 PQP per 100 miles redeemed for a UA-operated flight
  • Award ticket redeposit fees are being removed
Details here:

I was planning to switch to a different Star Alliance program next year and this pretty much cements this. I have been looking at Aegean Miles+Bonus as an alternative to United.

That said, the new Star Alliance credit card also looks promising. With that, you should be able to earn United Gold status going forward by spending $60,000/year on your HSBC credit card, rather than through earning PQP/PQF and flying at least 4 UA sectors.

I've been 1K for around 10 years but, being based in AU, the new PQP system has made it pretty hard. With zero business travel this year I've locked in Platinum for 2023 but the new* PQP thresholds will make it hard for me even to make Platinum in 2024 and beyond.

I've looked around at different options but I might stick w UA in the short term and then move to the *G card towards the end of next year ...

So am Au based lifetime Gold with UA and just got an email extending my 1K status for 2023. My only UA flight since Covid started was in Polaris on 30Dec22 Yvr/Sfo/Mel for A$900 plus flight credit of A$1450 and 80 Pluspoints of the 320 that expire 31Jan23. Color me impressed as I expected nothing given the new requirements.

Checked my email this morning and came across this piece of surprising good news:

Indeed a quick check of MyAccount on United indicates my Premier membership is good through 2024 now:

Keep in mind I have only set foot on one United flight last year: an award flight between San Francisco and Los Angeles

I reckon I cannot be the only person on this forum who received this unexpected piece of good news!
