2022 - The year in review

Felt like we finally got back to a bit of normal this year, with two trips to NZ and one to the US. Spending my birthday in Hawaii was a bit of a highlight, bringing covid home from NZ a definite lowlight.

21 flights
54,016km (33,564 miles)
No new airports or airlines but new routes: LAX-KOA, HNL-MEL
10Y, 7J and 2F (one being SYD-LAX F award)
Airlines: VA, QF, AA, HA, NZ and JQ
Longest: SYD-LAX
Shortest: KOA-HNL

Oh, and qualified VA WP for the first time.

We had felt very cut-off from our daughter and granddaughter in London and were champing at the bit for a visit. By years end we travelled to the UK twice, the first by the SYD-DRW-LHR route in the B789, which was quite a different experience. The second trip was SYD-LHR-MAN, LCY-BER-LCY, LHR-SIN-BNE-SYD (all in J except LHR-BER-LHR in Y).

Our summary:
Miles: 44,603
Sectors: 11
New airports DUB, LCY & BER
New airline: None, went for simple routing and what we knew.
New aircraft: B789
New lounge: QFF First (SYD)
First overseas trip since Aug-Sep 2019
Best experience (flying): QF First Lounge
Worst Experience: 14hr layover in London owing to flight cancellations on the way to MAN
Airlines: QF, BA

Thanks to QF Double Status Credits offer, we made WP by the time we made SIN on the journey home. And I was able to fit in 4 EPL matches including ARS-FUL at Emirates.
Edit: correcting airport code.

1D13939F-C159-4F96-B121-CD75EB1A7596.png2022 saw a lot less work travel ( change in role at work, more pay, less flying )
So for the first time in 15 years, I had more leisure travel then work.
35 flights, 67359km
First international flight in October ( since February 2020)
10 new airports, FCO,PHL,ORD,DCA, DOH, BNA, PHX, BDL, BOS, CLT
3 new countries, Doha, Italy & Vactican City.
First OWA in J, my first QSuites, wife’s first international J seats.
New airline, QR.
2 go arounds on the same flight coming into BNE from LAX.
First time driving from 1 country to another, Ambassador Bridge, Detroit into Canada.
1st College and NFL football games in person.

Only two flights, we went to Darwin in June for a work conference. My boss knows I dont go to these things so he dangled me being allowed to book my own flights and hotel and hubby is allowed to tag along (and do his own thing) so I took the Corporate Traveller Y price and scored J flights for less than the price of Y and a hotel suite and had 4 days before and 2 days after the conference to enjoy Darwin. The GM was in row 30 something for both his flights.

Later this week we're off to Tassie via Melb - I think this was our 2020 Christmas plans. Next year I'll be looking to use my KF points for a OS trip.

Travel milestones
  • Reached Qantas Silver (& Gold)
  • Travelled internationally for the first time since 2020
  • Travelled to USA for the first time (Hawaii)
  • Crossed the international date line for the first time enroute to Hawaii
  • Visited the F lounge for the first time
  • Flew a coveted J reward on QF1 SYD-LHR as part of a OWA
  • Flew Rex for the first time, with my inaugural flight being delayed by 12 hours making it take longer than the bus
Since 2022 is not yet done, I will also be visiting North America for the first time flying to SFO in 8 days

I made up for lost time this year:
65 segments (1F, 1W, 41J, 22Y - the F was LAS-LAX on AS, so more QF domestic J than F)
188,230km
264 flown hours/11 days
89 hotel nights

Carriers flown QF, SQ, VA, MH, VA, FJ, JQ, AY, AS, AC, CX, AA, SB & Z2.

Across (in no particular order) 16x countries AU, NZ, UK (counted twice, England and Scotland), NL, FI, US, CA, MX, NC, FJ, WS, PH, SG, MY & HK. PH, MX & WS were new to me too. Flying TATL & TPAC for the first time in a single year was the big achievement.

I'm done until Jan now, ironically after my last flights (JQ/QF to/from SYD) last weekend just gone were cancelled.

Europe with Finnair in their new business class. . . not as plush as some but very happy as it was around $2,000 cheaper!
While in Europe took first Ryanair flight, Prague to Edinburgh. . . I can see why they got their bad reputation.
Philipines travelling for the charity I volunteer for. I checked in a water filter which took a week to catch up to me.
Just back from a Sydney to Perth trip on the Indian Pacific.

All flights were on time and apart from the water filter, mentioned above, all checked in baggages arrived OK.

It was a relatively quiet flying year for me compared to the years before Covid arrived, but I'm happy to be traveling again.

There were 18 fights in total, including 6 domestic flights in Australia (all on QF), 2 international flights SYS-SIN and return on QF, 4 international flights SIN-HND-JFK on JL, and 6 domestic flights in the USA on AA. These were my first ever flights on JL and AA.

I retained my QF WP status for another year. I retained my Platinum status with Accor ALL, mainly because Sofitels are so expensive in the USA. I hope to reach QF LTG this year

For 2023, I'm hoping to visit Japan again, maybe Egypt and also Germany/France (all in separate trips). Nothing has been booked yet.

Just one trip for me from Sydney to Bangkok to see family, including dad who passed away during peak Covid. Lockdowns, to a degree, are unethical?

Sectors: 9
Miles: 25573 (21138 in J)
New airports: MUC MAN MRS VLI
New airline: NF
Journey highlight: Al Safwa F lounge

33 sectors
New airports, Muscat, Munich, Berlin (New)
New Airline, Oman Air
Highlight, finally back to Laos. Airline wise, Oman Air was very good, will use again.

A very quiet year for MrsK and I. We only did a few domestic flights for holidays, to Margaret River WA, and to Palm Cove/Port Douglas in Qld. Burned up a few points to get the balance down.

I did just one trip for work CBR-SYD, but that really doesn't count. Since changing jobs twice since the start of 2020 (once voluntary, the other not) my business related flying has dropped right off, which isn't a bad thing in one way. Since making it to LTG last year, maintaining status with Qantas isn't so important.
