Just as one example, there are a lot of families, especially the women who do the lion’s share of the work in the home and the child care and have to or wish to work outside the home who would’ve loved to of had their families help them with their load and their children. As well as the positive influence that many grandparents could have due to their love of family. It’s not all about the obvious advantages to the dominant workforce.

And they also threw in the no caps foreign parent migration policy.

I suspect they stuck they necks out because they they really believed they were going to win and they might as well go for broke - Bowens' "dont like it vote against us" being the comment that reveals what they really thought of their prospects. Just like Hilary.

Even the betting people paid out early to those who bet a Labor win.

Dont they know that until Antony Greene says who won, the result is unknown?

Had a bit of a shindig last night - maybe 50 people in all - which really started to kick off when Antony Green called Warringah for Steggall. A very negative and at times quite vicious campaign against Zali had been rejected emphatically by the voters - a portent for the remainder of the evening?

Too funny; almost 50 years ago : Don's Party.

We seem to have gone from predicting a recession because the ALP (or should I say "Unions") are going to win, to now saying things are already so bad we're heading for a recession, with international factors also a problem.

One good thing about the LNP winning the election is that they will actually have to prove they can be good financial managers, especially in a recession/depression. I wonder if they're up to it? After all Rudd and co got Australia through the last recession virtually unscathed.

The pink batts were ridiculed but the problems were with businesses rorting the program and being happy to send workers to their deaths and letting the government of the day wear the blame.

A perfect example of why we need industrial manslaughter legislation.

I wonder what influence the various religions will have with our re-elected PM and how that will influence things such as abortion law and civil rights?

One thing that organised religion conveniently omits is that not only do we have freedom of religion, we also need to have freedom from religion.

Spreading their dogma though public schools is wrong yet I reckon they will seek to have more time devoted to it and not allow any learning options for those who choose to opt out.

Other than blue chips were assets including money are real, The Ponzi scheme of weird and wonderful aggregation of obscure colaterlisation underpinning shares is alive and well

I must admit that I was concerned that my disdain of Australian politics was allowing true evil to prosper in the motherland. I was alerted on some TV thing recently that the evil Chinese had set up military bases on Australian soil (something about private airstrips being built privately to the same specs as military airfields - ie straight runways)

I would assume that this peril has been dealt with, and that dude Palmer has been recognized as a national hero and true patriot?

I love enjoying the spectacle from the outside - really a non-event.

Seriously for a moment - Australia should rejoice that politics and life in general are so goddam boring :)

Well it was the result I hoped not to see. Another three years of the same is a depressing thought; however, that's the way the country voted so that's what people want for the future, so not for me to complain.
Looks like your franking credits (and I have no problem with them being used to offset tax paid) and negatively geared properties will be safe. :)
Enjoy the glow of success.
I’m concerned about future world economic events and impact on Australia. We need to have a strong economy and I can’t think that Labor was going to be that stimulus. Having said that we can’t go too conservative either. Hopefully we have found some middle space. And Turnbull being more central than right (or left) pushed Labor too far left to get a point of difference. Just my 2 cents. I would love to see Albanese as Opposition Leader. I could not abide Shorten and seeing him as PM was something I found difficult to consider.

Catholic dogma has had some significant influence throughout the history of the Labor party. You see, just accept that such stuff happens on both sides and thinking that it doesn’t/hasn’t represents truly blinkered thinking.

Re the polls. I think two factors at play.

One is the phone methodology, with fewer landlines available and greater reliance on mobiles. Even things like call number display will case some form of bias - those like me who don't answer non-recognised numbers will not be in their sample.

Second is what seems to be called the 'shy Tory syndrome' - conservative voters not expressing their true intentions for whatever reason, but when they get the chance in the privacy of a poling booth - they go for it.

I seem to recall Rudd was religious.

Serious question: how many jobs are we talking about with Adani once it's up and running? Is it in the thousands?

I'd like to apologise in advance for what seems to be the election of Jacki Lambie to the senate from Tasmania.

A pure bogan. She got about 1/2 a quota, but likely to get in on preferences. Already mouthing off, telling the government what they had better do and better not do or else. Look out, she'll deal with them if they don't give her what she wants ...

Last time she got in she boycotted the government for months, refusing to see anyone (when the Govt had to negotiate for every vote) and even not attending parliament, because the government wouldn't give her a pet project she wanted in legislation. How that was representing the interests of the state escapes me.

I think we just have a different view about the economy but neither of the two main parties inspired me and the independents and greens were not going to get in.
I’m glad it’s over and hopefully the tail will not continue to wag the dog in the Liberals.

From what I know (not comprehensive), I'd say possibly close to 1,000 during the build, maybe 2-400 of hundred during the operation, including transport (direct numbers; indirect on tip). If the mine is staged in its growth, then numbers will rise periodically.

EDIT: The number of equivalent full time direct and indirect jobs in operational phase over 1,000 according to employment modellers for the project.

I hope the argument isn't that its 'only' so-many-jobs. Where I live, the urban greens were trying to stop the establishment of offshore fish farming. They said it would 'only create about a dozen jobs'. Now, this is a depressed rural area - they got the local timber industry closed down. In small country towns every job is important - meaning a family can stay locally and help support the area, keep the school open etc.
