An early start was called for again, rumor had it that some weather was moving into the central highlands that afternoon and that if we left it too late, we may not make it in! The X-trail had proven itself capable on previous hires but I'm not quite sure it would of been up for an extended snow mission.
Being that we would be passing close by to oatlands on our drive to the lakes we decided to drop in and check out Callington Mill
It's been genuinely restored and is once again producing fine flour, we had to buy some along with an obligatory Tassie devil for little bear. The township of Oatlands itself is quite old and nice for a wander around. Whilst wandering around find your way to the bakery and pick up a delicious Vegie pasty!
By about 1000 we had refueled and were on the road again, with the weather looking a little more ominous around every corner.
Fortunately we made it up onto the Central plateau without snow, but temperatures had started to drop to about 1 degree and the wind was strong enough to cut right through you. I've only ever been to the lakes prior with either Full sun or a Covering of snow, what we saw upon first arrival this time was almost otherworldly.
We were staying the night at 1 of 2 lodges operated by a Couple on the plateau ours being Freshwater on Berry. We absolutely loved the accommodation and if you're interested check out a quick review we wrote here Much more than your typical Highlands shack. | My Little Earth
We decided to call it a night early and subsequently got up early to find that the snow we wanted to see had finally fallen!
I'm like a kid all over again when it comes to snow and decided to brave the icy weather to have a look about
Our time to check out of Freshwater on Berry came way too quickly, but unfortunately we had to get a move on.

After our "Experience" we picked up a breakfast of champions (Or otherwise what's available early in the morning at the Lakes being Smiths Chips, Dark Chocolate and instant coffee!) and began our slow drive off the Central Plateau. It brought back a lot of memories heading past shacks I'd stay in during my teen years. The Scenery also continued to get nicer and nicer as we went along.
It wasn't too long before we finished our climb out of the central plateau and paused to celebrate the moment
What happens to snow when it refreezes, it's kinda entertaining for the rest of the family when you attempt to walk on it! Lucky I had my trusty North Face Hedgehogs on, these boot's have looked after in a few hairy situations and didn't disappoint this time!
The rest of the day consisted of stops at bakeries for delicious Coffee and provisions! The drive was a long one, but absolutely stunning as most in Tassie are!
The next two days were going to see us staying at Cradle Mountain!

Cradle mountain is another one of Tasmania's absolute gems!
It'd had been almost 15 years since I'd been back down this way and I was looking very forward to it. Tasmania put on it's absolute best "4 Seasons in a day" performance for us whilst at cradle mountain.
We had wanted to go for a bit of a trek around Dove Lake but unfortunately the prevailing snow kept us back.
If you're ever in Tassie and up for a good trek, the Cradle Mountain summit is well worth it! Just make sure you're prepared as the weather can get even more unpredictable once you're up on the plateau. All this snow left us a lot of time for some of our favorites things, Food, Coffee and a refreshing ale.
We did pay a visit to Devils @ Cradle before leaving the area. The tale of the Tasmanian Devil is becoming a sad one, I remember these guy's being everywhere carrying on whilst camping as a kid but these day's their numbers are really being cut down by Devil Facial Tumor Disease. Scientists are struggling to understand the basics of it, let alone how to prevent or cure it. Devils @ Cradle are one of many centers attempting to breed healthy devils and send them where needed to keep this little creature in existence.
Don't let the cute looks deceive you, these guy's will rip apart a Kangaroo in no time!
The morning we were due to leave cradle we were up quite early, if there's one thing (and there is far more than one thing!) but if there was only one thing that being a father has taught me it's an appreciation of the early morning. Even before the sun starts to rear it's head and Photog's get excited about the golden hour I love to observe the day waking up.
The drive this morn was an easy one, getting us into Burnie for a bite of breakfast at around 0800. A lot has changed in this seaside town of around 20,000 people. Apart from the reminiscing we didn't have too much of a reason to hang around Burnie and went straight on to Wynyard, the town which started my Aviation Addiction and where we'd be spending the night.
This was the first airport I flew out of at only a few weeks of age, We also tended to travel out of here quite a bit growing up. It wasn't only the flying on Kendell Saab's and Qantas Dash-8's that got me addicted, it was the hours I spent here with my grandfather on the fence watching all the GA movements.
It seems these day's that the rows of Lighties I remember all lined up are no longer.
We had only 1 night in Wynyard and decided to make a quick trip up to Table Cape in the afternoon. Come spring time the whole area comes alive with color for the Wynyard tulip festival. We had only gray sky's and drizzle, I think it's kinda pretty in it's own rugged way though.
Out room for thenight was at the Waterfront Wynyard Motel.

This had got to be one of the best Motel style accommodations I've stayed at in Australia. Wi-fi is free, Plunger coffee is in the room, The dining area/lounge is amazingly cozy with a woodfire and the owners are the friendliest folk you'll ever come across. When we return to the region there is no doubt we'll be staying here. The beautiful sight you get to wake up too is also a bonus.

Once again we had another early start, Launceston bound this time. We had all day to get there and so spent quite a bit of time venturing through towns on the North West coast to get there.
Penguin has always been a super pretty time, you just have to look out for these guys. They are everywhere!
We also went for a cruise out to Gunns Plains, it feels like a lush paradise. Pictures can say it far better than I can describe it
Our first night in Launceston was being spent at Grindelwald or Aspect Tamar Valley Resort. It was super cheap on Agoda and I had memories of hanging around Grindelwald as a kid. Not much has changed in this strange Swiss Village since the 90's. It's certainly starting to show it's age but it was good to spend a bit of time just out of town, the duck's entertained our little one and gave her a chance to have a run about.
The next day we descended into Launceston proper and I had one of my memories about the city smashed wide open. I'd never thought of Launceston as much of an alternate or foodie city, it's definitely turning that way though. There's a whole in the wall cafe down most alley ways and the Vegan/Vegetarian selection is huge (Compared to the rest of Tas anyway!) We'd been hanging for a good solid Vego breakfast for a long long time so you can imagine how delighted we were to come across this!
We came out of Fresh on Charles feeling so energetic and revitalized it wasn't funny. Almost immediately next door you'll find Garden of Vegan, these guy's produce hands down some of the best Vegan food I've ever tasted. We managed to get back multiple times during our one night in the CBD, they do takeaway as well which is handy when heading out and about.
We had supposed to be staying at the Mercure that night as to rack up stay's for the Accor free Samsonite promotion. As we rolled up to the building we could still see Mercure signs on the building, however as we got inside Best Western signs started appearing! Unfortunately between our stay in Hobart and now Best Western had taken over the two Mercure properties in Tasmania and our stay wouldn't qualify for the Samsonite promotion, no biggy it just would of been nice though!
The Reception did however sort us out with an upgraded room and a nice vantage point to check out this ancient (by Australian standards) city.
We spent most of our time in Launceston soaking up the clear and crisp winter weather whilst walking around town, enjoying a hell of a lot of coffee and admiring the buildings.
Customs have been in this building since 1860 and still work out of it, I love this style of architecture!
Bellies full of great food, enjoying being rugged up and some awesome memories saw us leaving TAS on a great note, next to come was a flight to MEL in the good old Q400

Ahhh yes, the next step. A trip out of LST. The last time I visited this airport the bags still came out on trailers towed by a ride on lawn mower.
Things have certainly changed and we even had the VA "Lounge" to ourselves
Our flight today was operated by VH-QON with captain Robert Anderson at the helm.

Having travelled on them quite a bit as a young lad, I've always had a soft spot for the Dash-8. As we boarded next to a Deathstar A320 I couldn't help but feel that I'd made the better choice for this flight, memories flooded back!
It was interesting to see that QF have now moved to a snackbox style service, something I've had a lot of with various SE Asian carriers and their prop aircraft.
The flight drew to an end very quickly, I always enjoy rides in a turboprop
It was a quick two days in Melbourne this time, we did what we usually do and caught up on some of the best Veg eats in the country and drank a hell of a lot of coffee.
Everytime we come to Melbourne there seems to be a protest of some kind with this trip being no exception

Our time ended in Melbourne rather quickly and after somehow getting the car out of the car park off Manchester Lane unscathed we headed back to the airport.
We we're travelling J today for the first time on VA, Considering the old PE seats I was certain it wouldn't take much to leave a good impression.
Unfortunately as awesome as travelling with a little one is, it doesn't leave much time for photography so you'll have to forgive the absolute lack of in flight pictures.

As I may have previously mentioned, I have an absolute soft spot for the Embraer 190. Not sure what it is, I just find them a pleasure to ride on. We took our seats up quickly and readied for the flight ahead. We had a short delay out of Melbourne due to our Captains inbound flight being late which which led to her being late to our aircraft.
We didn't partake in the wine on Offer but enjoyed ourselves the salad from the menu, I can't actually remember what the other choice was. Due to the lack of Oven the meals can be a bit boring on the E-jet, with the exception of the Bircher Muesli on breakfast flights.
Sydney rolled up very quickly and without a fuss we were at the gate and awaiting our final flight to take us home to OOL.
The lounge at SYD has finally completed it's renovation downstairs and now has views out to the tarmac, although nothing to rival the lounges at OOL and CBR.
It's always nice to be able to chill out, charge some devices, grab a coffee and a bite to eat. Weekends are always quiet, leaving plenty of space about

Our second flight of the day saw us sitting in Row 2 with another reasonably full J cabin. The J seats on the 738 certainly feel a little roomier, but on a 1hr flight it's in no way a deal breaker.
In our experience the CSM's operating into OOL always seem to be very chipper, today was no exception and we got looked after well.
Unfortunately I don't have a great deal to add to this flight, it came and went quickly!

It didn't take long for our next trip to come up, but as always there was time for spotting at OOL in between trips!
I love watching the lighties doing circuits, especially during windy days!
Not Barry or Big Yella Fella
It's very easy to get very close at OOL, you certainly can't get too much closer, even on the other side of the fence.
Our next trip had us heading down to Melbourne for the weekend, but using the Australian Frequent Flyer mantra of "Why Fly Direct when you can connect?" we were heading through SYD in both directions. My wife and I split onto seperate flights OOL - SYD for the way down and were going to meet up in SYD and carry on to MEL on the same flight. She was well deserving of a break and 4900 points isn't a hell of a lot to upgrade to J fare so that she might relax even more. That saw Bub and I heading down on VA500.

A sneaky call to VA the night before had us sitting in 1A for another 4900 points. The J Cabin was empty this morning so we got moved over to 1D/1F. A lot of folks don't like the Embraer J cabin a lot, I certainly don't mind it and I would far prefer the Embraer Y Cabin over the 737 anyday.
Breakfast this morning was a Bircher Museli.
I'm still fascinated by looking back and seeing the big "Fans" spinning
Our flight went super quick and we were admiring the view over SYD harbour in no time. Once on the ground we quick snuck up to the lounge for breakfast 3 and to await Wifey's arrival, although after heading down for a bit of shopping and buying a lifeproof iPad case (Love this thing! But we'll talk more on that later!) we went down to the gate to wait for wifelet.
A quick bite to eat from the lunch menu in the lounge and then back on for round 2

Unfortunately the Rego I had listed for this aircraft is Incorrect so I can't even give you an exterior shot. I've not got any inflight shots either - what a poor effort! I can say though that we were lucky enough get a shadow and enjoy the whole row and that it was another quick flight.
After nearly running over 10,657 people in Manchester La whilst trying to access parking last time in Melbourne we thought we'd Skybus it in this time. We were staying at the Holiday Inn which is a very gentle walk from Spencer St Station (No I will not call it Southern Cross Station!
) This stay would pick us up a couple of Big Win challenges in the way of Gaining us our 3rd IHG brand and getting a Saturday night in.
No upgrades available today but we still ended up with a decent view and comfortable room, IHG bed's in general always feel nice!
It's not everyones cup of tea but for us Melbourne is all about strolling/tramming it about and soaking up all the food and coffee it has to offer!
I swear this Donut van at the Queen Victora Markets is the same one that I've been going to since I was 10
As mentioned in a previous post, always something going on in MEL
At the rounded bar at the HI on Flinders, nice spot to enjoy a beer and watch the world go by!

A sneaky call to VA the night before had us sitting in 1A for another 4900 points. The J Cabin was empty this morning so we got moved over to 1D/1F.
Breakfast this morning was a Bircher Museli.
I'm still fascinated by looking back and seeing the big "Fans" spinning
I love watching the lighties doing circuits, especially during windy days!

It's very easy to get very close at OOL, you certainly can't get too much closer, even on the other side of the fence.
Our next trip had us heading down to Melbourne for the weekend, but using the Australian Frequent Flyer mantra of "Why Fly Direct when you can connect?" we were heading through SYD in both directions. My wife and I split onto seperate flights OOL - SYD for the way down and were going to meet up in SYD and carry on to MEL on the same flight. She was well deserving of a break and 4900 points isn't a hell of a lot to upgrade to J fare so that she might relax even more. That saw Bub and I heading down on VA500.

Our flight went super quick and we were admiring the view over SYD harbour in no time. Once on the ground we quick snuck up to the lounge for breakfast 3 and to await Wifey's arrival, although after heading down for a bit of shopping and buying a lifeproof iPad case (Love this thing! But we'll talk more on that later!) we went down to the gate to wait for wifelet.
A quick bite to eat from the lunch menu in the lounge and then back on for round 2

I've not got any inflight shots either - what a poor effort! I can say though that we were lucky enough get a shadow and enjoy the whole row and that it was another quick flight.
After nearly running over 10,657 people in Manchester La whilst trying to access parking last time in Melbourne we thought we'd Skybus it in this time. We were staying at the Holiday Inn which is a very gentle walk from Spencer St Station (No I will not call it Southern Cross Station!) This stay would pick us up a couple of Big Win challenges in the way of Gaining us our 3rd IHG brand and getting a Saturday night in.
No upgrades available today but we still ended up with a decent view and comfortable room, IHG bed's in general always feel nice!
It's not everyones cup of tea but for us Melbourne is all about strolling/tramming it about and soaking up all the food and coffee it has to offer!
I swear this Donut van at the Queen Victora Markets is the same one that I've been going to since I was 10
As mentioned in a previous post, always something going on in MEL
At the rounded bar at the HI on Flinders, nice spot to enjoy a beer and watch the world go by!

And now, for the amazing return from Melbourne.
We Spent a fair chunk of the morning out North Melbourne way, drinking far too much coffee as it's all amazing and visiting a Vegan bakery that hadn't popped up on our radar before
As much as locals may not be too impressed with the Myki, it certainly works a hell of a lot better than anything that QLD has been able to produce. Catching the trams and trains around the place is an absolute breeze.
All too soon it was time to head to the airport and begin the Journey home

The VA lounge at MEL is currently undergoing massie renovation which is well needed, it was a bit of a closet at the time of this trip. Half of the renovation has since been completed and I look forward to checking it out on our way to WA in a couple of weeks.
All that awful hoarding should be gone soon
As usual for us with VA the flight was smooth and uneventful. We only had a short wait in SYD before hopping on the next leg

It was great to be back on an E-Jet, I love these things. Especially at the moment travelling as 2 adults and a Lap infant, they certainly seem roomier than a 737 and we always have the row to ourselves (Unless of course you're lucky enough to score 1A and 2A and have two rows to ourselves!
I love the size of the windows on these things. Delta and friends seem to operate a few different Embraers in the US so I'm looking forward to trying them out.
The main thing to report from this flight was how amazing the CSM was. She was a ray of sunshine that lit up the space around her. There wasn't any one thing that made this typical 1 hour hop so awesome, it was just how we were spoken to and dealt with from the moment we boarded. The CSM also wrote some a great little novel in our Bubba's logbook.
And so ends another trip, counting down to the end of the year and there are only 3 trips left,

We were barely home 2 weeks before it was time to head out again.
I'd managed to pick up return tickets to AKL for 2 adults at about spot on $400. This would be our 2nd time to NZ but 1st time to the North Island and only 4 nights at that.
Unfortunately the day before travel I got a text and phone call from virgin stating that our flight would be delayed by an hour, then two, then three and eventually up to about six. I think this is why I prefer travelling in the morning rather than night, the anticipation and boredom from just waiting to go to the airport can be a killer.
Anyways, we eventually rolled into OOL about 1530 for our 1800 or so scheduled departure. Travelling with an 18 month old and arriving into AKL at about 0015L was never going to be ideal but you just roll with the punches in these situations!

Check in at OOL was as always, simple and quick. We made our way into the VA Lounge in no time. One good thing about the delay was the view, I've always loved the OOL Lounge for how quiet it is and the view.
Being that we were now the last flight for a little while the staff started to pack up dinner just as we'd gotten stuck in, not such a bad thing as we'd already eaten before turning up to the airport.
OOL Is a strange one when it comes to INT Departures. We'd already cleared Domestic Standard security and were in the Domestic Sterile area where the VA Lounge is but still had to go through Lags screening and Outwards Immigration Processing. We left the lounge a tad early and started the process. I got selected for the Bodyscan machine for the first time, it was painless, efficient and definitely a hell of a lot quicker than the LAGS Frisks that Security used to conduct. Immigration also went smoothly as could be.
Priority Boarding was called in no time and went well up until we ran into the glass doors to get on the Tarmac, we waited a quick 5 minutes and shared a quick chat with our fellow PB friends, none of whom seemed too fazed by the delay. The folks starting to line up behind however, this 5 minutes just seemed to give them more ammo to break down into a whine fest.
As is per usual with myself, I've got absolutely bugger all pictures in flight! We didn't take any food but did have quite a relaxed journey with Bubba falling asleep for most of it and us enjoying some time out to watch the iPad. I wasn't aware that the Old PB birds had Inflight Wi-Fi Streaming but apparently they do, the moving map was very handy.
Within no time we were descending through the clouds and out into a very rainy AKL night. Although we can no longer use smartgate when travelling with bubba we got through inwards immigration very quickly and even managed to get an elusive (For AU Passport holders at least) NZ entry stamp in bubba's passport.
It was 0100 by the time we get our car and were on our way to the Crowne Plaza for a well earned sleep. I had booked a basic King Club room for around $190 NZD a night and had noticed that the room type in my booking had changed to a King Club Suite just before our departure. I was hoping this would hold out and I wasn't disappointed. Checking in I noticed that our original room number had been crossed out and a new one on the top floor hand written in. Check in formalities complete we proceeded to the room and were greeted with a 2 storey suite.

It was about 0200 before we got settled in and considering all things, the little bear that attaches itself to us when travelling was doing very well and drifted off to sleep without too much fuss! We had a reasonably late start to day 1 and thought we'd just take it easy. A quick breakfast was had in the Club before heading down to the basement of the building the CP is in to grab some snacks for our walkabout. There is an awesome Sushi place downstairs which we seemed to head back to daily. If you're a fan of Asian Cuisine there is also a restaurant for each cuisine downstairs, Chinese to Malay to Korean to Indonesian, awesome times!
All we wanted to achieve today was get a couple of SIM Cards and some information from the visitors centre. After achieving those two things we wandered about the city
We don't generally care much for the standout sites and are happy to cruise about!
The evening saw nothing but a chill out back in the club whilst plotting a bit of a road trip for the next day before retreating to the room
We decided that we'd head for a drive up toward the Coromandel peninsula and see where we ended up. This is another great enjoyment for us whilst travelling, just seeing where the road takes us.
After driving through some quite lovely scenery and taking in the fresh country air we ended up in the town of Thames.
We ended up getting distracted here for quite a while. There are some great shops in town full of local crafts and up cycled items. We also came across a vego cafe quite unexpectedly!
The afternoon rolled around very very quickly and we needed to hit the road back to AKL. We decided to take the scenic route back and were not disapointed.

The 'Rolla that got us about, it had less than 100km's on the clock. I don't really like getting new cars without gutter rash or any defects in the body.
We enjoyed some chips down by water and enjoyed chilling out.

Our remaining full day was spent with a day trip down to Otorohanga, to visit the Kiwi House of course!
Whilst we did see some cool birds and such hanging around the Kiwi park I found something even cooler - A crazy amazing coffee house/roastery based in the rattly old train station!

They do some amazing custom drinks including a Thai style coffee, complete with sweet milk and such!
We couldn't depart without a bag of Chocolate coffee beans which I smashed down before reaching Hamilton, I was buzzing for hours.
We once again had an easy drive home, admiring the scenery and such. We didn't go straight back to the CP however, a workmate told me about some awesome night markets on in the outer suburbs of AKL, near the airport. AFter the obligatory quick spotting stop at the airport we carried on to the Hunters Plaza Night Markets.
The next day saw us leaving AKL after a fleeting visit, but not without first heading out to the suburb of Otara for another round of marketeering. Once again these markets were very legitimate and much more based around the various Pacific Islander communities that call AKL home. Some of the craft for sale looked absolutely amazing and the music left me wandering with a smile on my face.
Our time came to an end very quickly and within 15 minutes we found ourselves back at AKL for our flight back home (Thankfully no delays this time around!)

Things got a little quirky at check-in, it was only begrudgingly that we were served in the Priority Line and with a huff that our bag's were accepted on a saver lite fare. 3 x times over I was asked if I was indeed the person named on my VFF Card, my passport didn't seem to confirm that fact........ Next time we are heading through with NZ and I'll be interested to give their Premium Check-in Area a go.
Immigration formalities proceeded quickly, security not so much. It's one of the biggest lines I've gotten at security for a little while, combine that with quite snappy security folk and you don't have a great combination.
We quickly made our way to the Koru Lounge and were delighted to come across a kids room. We set up camp just outside and took turns grabbing a bite to eat from a menu much more extensive than what I'm used to in the DOM VA Lounges, the only thing lacking would be a view.
Boarding didn't seem to get called so we popped down to the gate to find the last few people hopping onboard, perfect timing! Unfortunately we didn't start with a shadow but not long after the flight took off the CSM moved our row mate to a PE Seat, double win. Speaking of the CSM on this flight, he was probably the most genuine and caring we've ever come across, not over bearing but with you frequently enough to ensure needs are met. The free snacks were certainly appreciated as well
The flight was terribly smooth as was our arrival into OOL. It's a great time of day to arrive into the Int'l side of OOL as it's the only flight down. From stepping off the aircraft to into a cab would of taken 10 minutes, OOL always seems consistent with priority baggage delivery.
Another trip down, only two left for the year!

In the vein of good AFF'er Erk, I shall be updating my latest trip almost live and filling in with more comprehensive posts as I get time to process photos from my actual camera and write well.
With that little intro out of the way it's time to begin our next trip, a 3 week venture taking us to WA, CNS and Thursday Island. The trip ended up this way in true AFF fashion, why fly direct when you can connect!
The day began at 0400 as we get ready and roused our little one for the 0510 taxi pickup. As usual the process at OOL went quickly and smoothly with us enjoying the quiet lounge in no time
As is the way at VA, on just worked and we took up our assigned positions at 1A and 1C
We were travelling OOL - MEL - PER today with a 3 hour layover in Mel to catch up with friends, it also gave me a chance to check out the renovated love and take in how old school parts of the terminal are. It reminded me a lot of my childhood where a lot of time was spent transiting. MEL.
Virgin gave me a phone call whilst I was in the lounge stating that our A330 had been subbed for a B738, I found I out last week on expert flyer! This meant I was already prepared For the difference in cabin, at least the menu was still full coast to Coast albeit a bit slower.
I didn't take a picture of the main but it was a Thai curry and went down a treat!
