I was just looking at some domestic itineraries in Japan on ANA, and many have connection times as low as 20 minutes. Being Japan, I bet they probably work too! Don't think I've seen such low MCTs before.

A totally domestic itinerary... but if there are delays, connection is cooked.

Yes, this is Japan, so delays will be rare (and not taken well by both nationals and foreigners alike), and yes it is protected.

Reminds me of old days QF regional connections, e.g. at ports like MKY, CFS etc., which used to be able to be sold with MCTs of 20 or 25 min (instead of 40 min at larger domestic ports). Of course, if the weather has something to say, those rather unique, tight itineraries can be torpedoed.

Im more impressed NH flies a 787 to matsuyama.

But yes not surprised with Japan. I was at CTS 2 years ago where we were delayed by 55mins getting to the airport (train all running extra slow due to snow). We were all in a massivel line to check in/bag drop and I think we finished the check in 19mins before our scheduled departure. Went through security etc and flight was only 8 mins delayed pushing back (mainly waiting for the check-in people). Bags all made it on no problems.

From 2002 to 2009 We flew BNE-NRT-JFK at least 3 times a year to visit our son and family. We chose JAL as paid J was 50% cheaper than QF and was 2 hors less in total Travel time. That was because of the 55 minute transfer at NRT. On on occasion the BNE-NRT flight was late yet we still made the connection. Time from deplaning to boarding ~12 minutes. Probably because thy changed the usual gate for the BNE flight to one that was the closest to transfer security which we were escorted through.

Isn’t this a reflection of how airlines have moved to padded flight times so they can be delayed but still be on time or early, then promote on time performance?

Today I flew to Canberra from Melbourne. Flight left gate around 30 mins late but landed only 6 minutes behind schedule as they gave themselves 70 mins to make the journey.
