If I book 2 rooms at a Hilton for 1 night, does this count as 1 or 2 nights for requalification for Gold / Diamond purposes? I suspect only 1 night but would like to know for sure to avoid having to do a bit of a mattress run!

It's one night and one stay. You'll get the points for both rooms.

^^^This has been my experience as well kpc, but I think I recall others saying they only received points for their room and not the 2nd. To be sure (to be sure, to be sure if you're Irish), I always request on checkout, that my two accounts are merged into one. I've never had an issue with them doing that (accounting purposes I suggest to them) and I've never had an issue of not recieving points on the 2nd room!

1 night, 1 stay, base points on cost of rooms, but not accounts on both, so merge into your room before paying.

I have done this at least 4 times in the last 18 months and it has not varied, apart from the second room not posting occasionally.

I am pretty confident that it counts as 1 stay but 2 nights towards qualification. Did this before and was automatically posted.

Here's what the T&C state: (HHonors Terms & Conditions)

Accrual of Points
5.A Member may earn Base Points for up to two rooms per stay, if all eligible charges for both rooms are paid on one folio. Base Points will be earned for all eligible folio charges incurred on both rooms. The term "eligible folio charges" is defined below. Bonus Points issued on Base Points, including tier bonuses (15%, 25% or 50%, depending on Member tier), Bonus Points earned through the HHonors Points and HHonors Points Earning Style Option and double or triple Base point promotions, will apply to the total Base point credit earned for both rooms. For any other bonuses, including HHonors Marketing Partner Bonus Points and other promotional bonuses, Bonus Points will be awarded on one room only. For purposes of obtaining tier status, a Member may receive one stay credit on one room only. For purposes of earning miles for stays, miles may only be earned on one room only.
Here's an FT thread which show how confused thigs can be: Reservation for 2 Rooms - Do I earn HHonors Points on Both?

As for nights, there are actual definitions of a 'night' directly in relation to a 'stay'.

This appears in the T&C's: (Hilton HHonors Membership Tiers)

A "night" is a night that is part of a "stay," as that term is defined herein.
So if accommodation does not come under the auspices of a 'stay' then no 'nights' (toward status) may be earned.

To put it another way: if a 'stay' can only earned for the one room then only the 'nights' that are part of that 'stay' for that one room would count toward tier status.

Of course, since it is not clearly stated then it become a real coughshoot on nights crediting

Thanks to all, esp. serfty, for posting the Ts and Cs. Looks like I should NOT depend on the 2nd room counting for nights / stays for requalification which looks like only GOLD at this point with exactly 40 nights planned this calender year.

One of the better things with SPG is that up to three rooms can count towards status as well as earn points etc, AFAIK they are one of the few chains that allow this, if you have kids those rooms come in handy.
