This is the first trip report I have written on AFF so please be kind! I'm also the world's worst photographer so please don't be expecting any works of art with my excellent photographic skills ;)I take many trips every year, but thought to savour the memories I would write as much down as possible.

After a quick trip to Europe last year for work, I planned this latest trip about 10 months ago to block out the dates for Mr Mella and myself...as being able to get away for a proper holiday is quite rare for me. I used points for some flights and paid for others, and the goal was to experience a few different airlines that had time schedules to suit our plans.

This Trip report will cover the following sectors as well as general destination comments and lounges...and some stories along the way.

MEL to KUL: Air Asia X Premium
KUL to LHR: MH Y
LHR to NCE: BA Club Europe
MXP to JTR: EasyJet Y
JTR to ATH: Aegean J
ATH to AUG: Etihad Y
AUH to HKG: CX J
HKG to KUL: CX J
KUL to MEL: Air Asia X Y

The destinations we visited were Kuala Lumpur, London, Monaco, Italy (Ventimiglia, Torino, Milan), Santorini, Athens and Abu Dhabi/Hong Kong in Transit and also included Mr Mella driving for the 1st time in Europe with a rental car, his love of all things cars (Ferrari Drive, Car Museums).

The hotels we stayed in were as follows

Hilton KL
The Trafalgar Hilton London
Novotel Monte Carlo
Calypso Hotel Ventimiglia
NH Hotel Turin (Old Fiat Factory)
Hilton Milan
Absolute Bliss Santorini
Hilton Athens
Hilton KL (again)

We arrived at MEL airport on a freezing cold day and as I had received the upgrade a few days prior via Optiontown had already checked in online and printed off boarding passes. A short wait at the Air Asia X Counter (no fast track passes available) to give them our bags and we didn't delay and went straight through...and it was lucky we did!
It was a fairly quiet Wednesday and cleared all processes within 1/2 hour, a quick look around Duty Free (rip off) and we made our way to the Gate where they section off Economy and Premium passengers by rope. The Gate Dragon barked at me when I went to go under the rope even when I explained we were flying that class...she let us through but gave me attitude....get a life woman, you work for Air Asia. (or maybe that's why she was grumpy?)

Flight Air Asia X 215
Aircraft: A330
Scheduled time: 9:35am
Actual time: 11:37am
Flight Time: 8h 30m

Stepping onto the plane we had chosen 1A and 1C and was quite pleased with the seat size and the angled seating for the price we paid. Only 6 out of 12 seats in Premium were filled which is surprising considering how many people put in for upgrades with Optiontown.

The FA came over and asked if we wanted our pre brought meals straight away or during the flight. I had purchased two and said later on was fine. We received a bottle of warm water and got ready for push back...or so we thought.
"Ladies and Gentleman this is your Captain...there is a power outage here at the airport and we have been delayed....shouldn't be more than 1/2 hour delay"
Yeah sure....after checking Twitter, the entire airport had gone into a blackout and no flights were able to leave, lines were backed back, check in desks were unavailable...it seems it went out the minute we stepped onto the plane.
As Air Asia has no entertainment offerings, Mr Mella had the laptop and I had the iPad..and thank goodness for in seat power so we were able to keep charged throughout the flight.

After a 2 hour delay we finally left and had a fairly uneventful flight. The FA's barely showed themselves during the flight and seemed to do everything in their power to avoid coming into contact with passengers. The food was absolutely disgusting (Nasi Lemak and Chicken Satay both with those delicious bottles of warm water)....I wouldn't serve it to my dog....so munched on pringles instead.

Air Asia in flight nasi lemak.jpg

Arriving in KL 2 hours late into what is best described as the cow shed (the LCCT Terminal), it was around 15 mins from clearing the plane to collecting bags.
The heat was unbearable and I was grumpy we had arrived late (was hoping to hit the markets)....and I was looking everything for that little sign with our name on it from the Hilton. No sign, no driver....looked everywhere, inside, outside, near the taxis, near the buses...nothing. Now I was really grumpy. My cough Global Sim card wasn't working, and Mr Mella wasn't impressed thus far with my so called fantastic organisational skills.
After waiting another 45mins we decided to get a taxi (and that in itself was annoying...find the coupon stand, buy the taxi coupon, give to some guy who was hoping for a tip..no chance busta)...
The taxi driver we had did around 140km on the freeway and made it to the hotel in about 40 mins, which judging by the journey on the way home...was very quick.

Checked in to the Hilton KL and asked for a manager straight away as to why the driver wasn't there (delay or no delay, they should have known the flight arrival time). Very apologetic and nice and offered a complimentary driver for our return trip.
The staff at the Hilton are fantastic, always remember your name, very friendly and helpful.
We were upgraded to a Grand Executive Suite (which we had already booked on the return leg) and it was a very nice room with separate lounge and office area, huge bathroom and the standard comfy Hilton bed.
There would be no shopping for me tonight, as we didn't get there to almost 830pm and the markets close by 10pm, so we ordered room service (delicious and so cheap!) and watched some TV.

DSCN0078.jpgDSCN0081.jpgDSCN0083.jpg

The next morning we checked out at 7:30am and walked across the road to KL Central Train Station to check in our luggage directly with MH and catch the Express to KLIA for our flight to London.
No one in the check in line for MH and received our boarding passes and said goodbye to our bags....little did we know this would be the last time we would see our bags for 48 hours....

25 mins on the train to KLIA, a bit of duty free shopping for Mr Mella (who loves to shop) and we boarded on time for the long and very painful Y flight to London.

Next up....London and the missing bags

Look forward to the rest of your TR. Looking at accom for JTR next year, were you happy you chose your location ? (trying to decide on the same or Oia)

Look forward to the rest of your TR. Looking at accom for JTR next year, were you happy you chose your location ? (trying to decide on the same or Oia)

Yes loved our hotel and would pick over Oia any day. So close to everything (we hired a quad bike)...only thing I hated was the 120 steps up and down to our room!

Love the TR so far... Air Asia X soft product sounds, and looks, .... "value for money"

Flight: MH 004Aircraft: 747 400
Scheduled Time: 10:05am
Actual Time: 10:42am

With our bags safely on board (or so I thought), we made our way to the gate. KLIA is a great airport, very efficient, clean and easy to navigate around.

This was the flight we were dreading the most, and I managed when I booked to pre select 2 seats towards the back (only 3 rows have 2, 4, 2 seating...the rest are 3, 4, 3).
Pleasantly surprised by the very friendly FA (Mario, It always amuses me to see European type names for people of Asian descent) who told us we could spread out into the spare seats, so both Mr Mella and I had 2 seats each for the flight.

Then the drama started just before the flight was getting ready to leave. The lady in front of me with her daughter demanded to the FA that no nuts be served as her daughter had an allergy. They asked her if she had advised the airline and she said no, however she said her flight to BNE from LHR the FA's had been very helpful and that she wanted no nuts served to any passengers within 10 rows of her.

As someone that has organised travel for groups of young people, many who have anaphylaxis, I know that you need to advise the airline so that the cleaners can properly clean the areas around those particular seats. In this case, she hadn't bothered to tell them (so my guess is that her daughter's condition wasn't all that severe or she would have done this)
She started fighting with the two FA's that she wanted no nuts served to any other passengers and they in turn wanted her to sign a liability form, saying that in the case of any illness/accident they would not be held responsible as she hadn't advised the airline.
This fight went on for 1/2 hour and at one stage (as I could hear and see the entire conversation) I quite loudly said behind her "You could at least ask the people around you if it's ok if they don't eat nuts, don't just demand it you rude lady". Needless to say the FA's smiled at me, but the lovely lady obviously didn't hear me.
They ended up offering to move her and her daughter (who looked embarrassed by the fuss) to the very last middle row (so they had 4 seats between them)...obviously no traces of nuts anywhere near those seats.....
I was served peanuts and asked by the FA with a wink not to eat them....I was very close to throwing peanuts towards the back area, however it wasn't the daughter's fault her Mum was an idiot, so managed to refrain myself ;)

Between sleeping, eating and watching MH's very ordinary entertainment offerings, the plane experienced some of the worst turbulence I have ever encountered. At one stage the plane jumped in the air and many of the overhead bins opened....I grabbed hold of Mr Mella (who was sleeping and said leave me alone) and sat there wondering if the end of my life had come to a packet of peanuts and the movie Inception.

We arrived into LHR 40mins late and I was dreading the lines at immigration...but surprise surprise....no lines!!! We went straight through within 10 mins of leaving the plane to the baggage area...not bad for a week before the Olympics!

Waiting at the baggage carousel, so happy to have finally arrived and looking forward to real food and a shower and an announcement comes over the PA
"Could Mr Mella please come to Counter No. 4"
Mr Mella and I looked at each other and started to worry....had we done something? Did the airlines find Mr Mella's collection of aftershave? Did I pack too many shoes?

Alitalia Counter at LHR (who look after MH's problems)
Her "We are sorry to inform you but your bags are still in Kuala Lumpur...they missed the flight"
Me: "what do you mean they missed the flight? Did they stop off for a coffee?"
Her (in thick Italian accent) "Yes the luggage belt broke down at the Train Station and they are still there"

Me (in tired Italian/English combo) "It broke? How could you let us on the plane knowing our luggage wasn't on it"
Her "I am very sorry, they will be arriving on the next flight tomorrow"
Me (now crying) "But all my shoes are in those bags, and I have no underpants" (honestly the things we say when tired)

This went on for around 20 mins and we filled out the paperwork saying where we were staying and she PROMISED they would be on the next flight which arrived the next day (Friday) at lunchtime (it was now 4pm Thurs)

I sniffled out the doors and prayed customs wouldn't stop us asking why we only had carry on while everyone else arriving into London had huge full bags.

We were lucky our driver had waited...he was about to leave....so we left the airport without our bags (more sniffles from me) and made our way towards the hotel in Trafalgar Square.

Arriving at The Trafalgar was like walking into a nightclub. This is an unusual Hilton property right in the heart of Trafalgar Square and is very much a boutique hotel.
Checked in and explained our luggage was lost. Girl at check in was more interested in the hot guys in the downstairs bar (and let's be honest, so was I) than caring about our luggage problems.
I asked for directions for any clothes shops and she gave some vague directions to some shop nearby which didn't exist.

Went to our room, freshened up (Oh wait...we don't have any toiletries we can't freshen up) and decided which way to walk in to find some clothes.

The next dilemma...trying to find clothes.

Both Mr Mella and I are plus size. If you've ever been to an Asian country you will know they cater to no more than a Size 8 and the average Australian person feels like an elephant.
Well it was even worse in London....every shop on Oxford Street catered for the hip and the tiny. Neither of which I am anymore.

We walked for about 2 hours and I went into every chain store...TopShop, H & M, M & S and struggled to find anything I liked that fitted (I had a business meeting the next morning also) and as for Mr Mella...forget it...
I brought a dress from H & M (material was a tatty as a rag) and a pair of thongs (apologies to my business associate in the morning but I had blisters from my shoes) and we kept searching.
Finally found a large sports store where he managed to buy some shorts and a singlet (American sizing) and we went back to the hotel for that hot shower and room service dinner, hoping and dreaming of our luggage.

Apart from the roof top bar and nightclub in the hotel, our room was very quiet. Couldn't even hear the noise from Trafalgar Square.

The next morning had a lovely cooked breakfast at the Hotel, had my meeting (again, apologies about how I look with no make up on) and saw some of the sights via the Hop on Hop off bus.

Arrived back at the hotel at 5pm and delivered to our room was ONE suitcase. That's right...one...not two. Started to panic....where was the other one???
Called the MH baggage line at Heathrow...and got the lovely Alitalia lady again

Her "Ciao Mrs Mella, yes there has been a problem. One of your suitcases made the flight, the other did not"
Me "What do you mean? Did the other suitcase decide to stay on in KL to shop?"
Her "There is another flight arriving tonight, hopefully it will be on it"
Me "Well I'm disappointed the other suitcase didn't let me know of it's plans to stay and holiday without us"
Her "Cross your fingers it turns up"

Now it was a problem. You see, silly silly me, you know the organised one...had packed medication for Mr Mella in his bag and not the carry on...and he had now gone 36 hours without it. If his bag had of arrived first I wouldn't have cared, but his was the bag we needed the most.

We had paid dinner reservations and the musical Ghost booked. We missed the dinner as I spent 2 hours ringing around to see if I could get medication for worse case scenario (hard to do late on a Friday night)

It has been a dream of mine to see a show on the West End forever, and Mr Mella insisted we still go, even though he was feeling sick, though I was happy to miss out if it meant he rested.

By chance I logged into my work email to pass the time and can see if anyone calls for me via the messaging service. Low and behold at 3am Australian time i had a call

"London Heathrow Baggage Service will be delivering your bag tonight as promised"

Well we ran to the show after hearing this news, Mr Mella blubbered (secretly) all the way through it...it was a fantastic show, great seats and both so glad we went. Go and see it when it comes to Melbourne next year (here's hoping they don't give the lead to Millsy)

Walked back to the hotel on a very balmy London night and walked into our room. Still no 2nd bag. It was now 11pm. Oh well....we were laughing by this stage. Must of been our bag playing a prank phone call.
1/2 hour later...a knock at the door...my favourite concierge Ahmed with our Bag! I could have kissed him! (I think I did)
And happily our two bags were now reuinited.
No idea what happened to both the bags however....they were a mess....everything everywhere...definitely had been through the ringer! Note to self: Carry medication in carry on from now on.

The next day (Sat) we did some more of the sights of London including the usual (Harrods, Madam Tussauds) and planned to leave the hotel at 5pm to go to LHR to fly to NCE with
BA.

The management at The Trafalgar were fantastic and very helpful and I would definitely stay there again.

Next up....BA Club Europe to NCE, Monaco, Mr Mella's Birthday & the Ferrari Drive

Likewise.. Really enjoying it.. Bag dilemmas & the like.. Agreed about the Air Asia food & the lack of appreciative ambience at KL LCC.. Look forward to your ongoing adventures..

Looking forward to the rest of the TR, mella2007!

Did you end up keeping receipts and sending the bill to MH, or to your travel insurer?

I guess you'll only be checking in luggage at the airport now! So much for convenient city check-in. Luggage belt broke? What kind of weak excuse is that? (Carry them to the train if need be - sheesh!)

I hope Mr mella's condition was not too serious, being that he could've been without his medication for some time, but that said at least you're much more the wiser now to pack important medication in your carry-on baggage.

Would you believe I didn't keep the receipts! I was so annoyed and tired the last thing I thought of at the time was my travel insurance (have a yearly policy)

An interesting start. And some wonderful cities to visit. Look forward to the rest.

KUL LCCT does have its utilitarian charms. But it was built as a freight terminal and re-purposed for passengers. A new LCCT terminal called KLIA2 is being build next to the main terminal. Due to open mid next year. Should be pretty good when it opens. With better transport options and an easier transfer to KLIA.

LHR to NCE
Flight: BA 352Aircraft: A320
Scheduled Time: 840pm
Actual Time: 8:30pm
Flight Time: 1h 48m
Club Europe

First time to T5 at LHR and what a nice terminal it is! Completely empty at 6pm and took us 5 mins to check in and go through scanners etc.
Saw the Concorde Room and the nice smiling girl standing out the front. Mr Mella asked which lounge we had access to and I said probably too loudly "Not that one"..pointing towards the Concorde Room. The nice smiling girl laughed at me and I asked which way it was to the BA lounges.

Went to them both, but stayed most of the time in the North one...quite busy at one stage but then quietened out. We had about 2 hours in there and some tasty food on offer and comfortable couches.
Highlight for me was staring at the Spanish Soccer Team while they relaxed.
Did some duty free shopping in the downstairs area and managed to find a Birthday card for Mr Mella (which I should have purchased in Australia as he ended up with a Mr Men card).

Quick boarding into Club Europe. Was not impressed with the seats or the service on offer. Very tired plane, I expected more (especially with the seat width and pitch). Got served a very ordinary Beef stew and cold rock hard roll, I ate a little while Mr Mella declined everything (he hates plane food)

Smooth landing into NCE and arrived a little earlier, but quite a long wait to get our bags (for a minute we started to panic).
Driver was there to pick us up and quite possibly the rudest I have ever encountered (that reminds me, must write that email of complaint)
I have been to this part of the world before and know how they drive, but this guy just broke all the rules...plus incredibly rude, arrogant and unfriendly. I started typing notes to Mr Mella on my iphone during the ride that the guy looked like the Albino from The Da Vinci code.

Made it to the Novotel in Monte Carlo just after midnight. Fantastic Junior Suite for the price (anything under $500 a night in Monaco is a bonus in Summer) with a balcony, lounge area, comfortable bed and very big bathroom.
Managed to cash in some Accor vouchers I had, so ended up being a very cheap stay for 2 nights.

We decided to go for a walk down to Casino Square, but took a wrong turn, so there we were in 40 degree heat at midnight, the streets were silent, and I was using every swear word I could think of in English & Italian directed to Mr Mella for his poor sense of direction and the fact I would have to go up and down 300 steps.
We weren't anywhere near Casino Square...we ended up at the Port. Lots of people around, outdoor nightclubs pumping with music and people. We wistfully looked at all the boats (seriously amazing) and managed to end up near the Casino around an hour later after dodging a main road and lots of cars.

DSCN0199.jpg

Now Mr Mella is a mad car fanatic. So Monaco is his kind of place. We sat at Cafe De Paris and had a snack and some drinks, and he just drooled at a cross between the cars and the women. I was trying to stop his mouth from gaping too much....but then I noticed some fine young gentleman and looked the other way instead!

The next day was a Sunday and most of the shops in Monaco are closed. We ended up buying a 24 hour bus pass for 5 euro each which was a much easier way to get around in the heat.
There was a Harley Davidson event at the Port with over 400 bikes and riders, merchandise and rides. Stayed there for a while before lunch, gelato and a siesta.
A Carnival cruise ship had docked for the day also for a shore excursion so quite a few people around in the main areas. It had departed from Barcelona and was finishing in Italy via Croatia.

DSCN0192.jpgDSCN0183.jpg

In the evening we went back to Cafe De Paris (the restaurant part) and had a very ordinary meal of Calamari in some sort of broth (I sent mine back, hated it), veal and dessert. Spent the next 4 hours talking to the people (2 families) on the table next to us who were from the States. As conversation progressed, one of the guys is a very well known Sports Presenter on ESPN and is besties with Le Bron James, Michael Jordan....Mr Mella mighty impressed as a huge fan! These people were lovely and we swapped business cards and hope to catch up in the States or next time they're in Oz...he was on his way to cover the Olympics in London. Have already exchanged emails and a new friendship has been formed from our love of Music reality shows!

Popped into the Monte Carlo Casino and won a little on roulette. The guy next to me on the roulette table really should have been wearing deodorant, as I swear I smelt like him for the rest of the night and it was putrid.

The next day was Mr Mella's birthday, and I had booked for him to drive a Ferrari for 1/2 hour. Car arrived and he was like an excited school boy. Off he went cruising the streets of Monaco while I stayed behind waiting for my relatives to arrive to pick us up.
Mr Mella said that the day before he was told an Australian had crashed one of the hire Ferrari's, but the owner didn't press for insurance as their excess is $5000 so they just pay it themselves. Thankfully he brought the car back in one piece and had a wonderful time.

DSCN0227.jpg

My relatives arrived soon after and we drove 1/2 hour to just over the border to a town called Ventimiglia where they live (my Uncles, cousins and Grandmother). It was wonderful seeing them again, though it had only been a year for me. Mr Mella had never met them before, but formed very close bonds while we were there.
We celebrated his birthday all together and they had organised a huge cake which was a nice surprise and very special. Not so special was the amount of Euro we spent on a watch for Mr Mella as a birthday present...I'm still recovering every time I look at it!

As Italians are, they like to draw you into their problems, so one of my Uncles had me calling his ex girlfriend telling her my Uncle still loved and why didn't she want to speak to him anymore! All that and more is what I had to deal with in the 4 days we spent with them.

Ventimiglia is the first town over the border from France. It is a small town, most known for it's massive market every Friday along the beach, where people from France and tourists come for cheap clothing, tobacco and alcohol.

My Uncle owns a restaurant there, so we ate there for lunch and dinner every day. Spent one day in Sanremo (home of the famous Song Festival) at the market, and the rest of the time just roaming the streets and spending time with family.
They have a sale night every week during Summer, so one night the entire town turned out in the main street with all the shops open and sales, and street performers and live music. Great atmosphere.

It was sad to leave, as my Grandmother is 87 and quite frail. She kept crying and didn't want us to leave, but alas we had to.

We departed Ventimiglia by Train for a one hour ride to a town called Alassio to pick up our hire car from Hertz.
First class carriage (seats 6 people) for 5 euro excellent value and very comfortable (Melbourne Trains you should be ashamed of what you offer the public)
An Australian couple sat in our carriage, and I smiled at them and asked where were they from. The lady quite rudely said "Australia" and I laughed and said "Yes so are we, where abouts?". She grunted and said Adelaide and glared at me.
Now I don't know about you, but when you're in a confined space and all you've spoken is Italian for 5 days, it is somewhat nice to hear the Aussie accent. I cannot believe the rudeness of some fellow Australian travellers in the world.
Outside our carriage was the hallway with windows that you could see the coast line. The lady screamed at a gentleman just standing there "How am I supposed to see the view, move along you fool, move along, you are hogging the window, how selfish are you"
I was mortified. No 1...he could probably not understand English, No 2...she was in the train for 10 mins, there was absolutely no need to speak to someone like this; and last time I checked the hallway was a public place, not her personal viewing platform. Her husband sat there, didn't say a word and looked miserable. I'd be miserable too if I had to holiday with that cow.
Mr Mella glared at me as he knows what I'm like and I so wanted to give her a piece of my mind. She must of been in her 60's, and we are in our 30's and look a lot younger, and I know the mentality sometimes of people like this. So I just ignored her and ranted about her when they left.

The town of Alassio is on the coast...the end of the line is Genoa. The Hertz office was inside the Railway station and we were right on time.
The Hertz rep spoke no English, and while my Italian is pretty good..it wasn't me driving and who needed info...it was Mr Mella...and sometimes translating a different dialect is a difficult thing!
Not only was there no GPS available at any of their rental stations nearby, but they also had no maps. We needed to get to Turin and had no idea where we were going. Mr Mella brought a map from the Station newsagent, but personally think it's very poor of a Hertz Rep in Italy to not speak just a little English and at least provide a map!

So off we went for the first time on our own on Italian roads in a car identical to a Holden. Mr Mella is a great driver (but don't tell him I said that) and got comfortable straight away with not giving way like the Italians do and doing 130km on the freeways. We ended up taking the long way to Turin and drove down the coast first, before we reached Savona and got onto the freeway there.

DSCN0320.jpg

Driving in Turin however was another story, the city is madness and without a proper map had no idea where the hotel was. We just kept following signs that said "Lingotto" which I knew was the industrial part of town where the old Fiat Factory was. We finally made it after screaming at each other for 1/2 hour about which direction to head in and parked the car and got to the NH Lingotto Hotel (where the original The Italian Job movie was filmed on the roof and the home of the old Fiat Factory).
They've done a great job converting this massive space into 2 hotels and a shopping centre and was very big and open plan. Got upgraded to quite a large room thanks to my Alitalia status and I had a sleep while Mr Mella went off to the Car Museum (the largest in Italy).
I apologise for these next photos as I personally think they're boring, but some of you boys might like them.

DSCN0349.jpgDSCN0352.jpgDSCN0363.jpgDSCN0360.jpg

Dinner was in a restaurant in the shopping centre complex. I got to visit the Juventus shop (Turin's Soccer Team) but didn't get a chance to do a stadium tour due to time.

The next morning we left the hire car at the hotel and asked Hertz to collect it for us as we didn't want to be driving around Turin trying to find their office. They picked it up which was a huge relief.
Had pre booked tickets on the Italian Eurostar from Turin to Milan (high speed only 50min journey compared to 2 hours on regional train) and happily sat back while the train reached speeds of 300km ph.

Next Up: Milan and EasyJet to Santorini

Great TR.. Pity we didn't get to meet up in London!

And you were more restrained than I with the peanuts! although you are right, it wasn't the daughters fault. And ghost was good? am deciding what to see before i leave here..
