I have designed a 16 sector ex JNB DONE4 (I would love to sneek in a 20sector one, but timing is just not right :()

The places I want to visit duing this 99% holiday 1% work trip are

ANC (Never been to Alaska and would love to see it.)
MIA (Kennedy Space Center (Need I say more???))
LAX (Rent a car and drive to Las Vegas)
DXB (Want to see Palm Island for my self!)
MRU (Had friends go to Mauritius and say it is a great place to relax.)

So I went and created this monster Great Circle Mapper. No sectors are under 1,100mi and it comes out to a wopping 54,266mi for the trip:!:

My primary goal is to visit places I want to and have never been before (hence the list above) My seconday goal it to squeeze as many miles out of this sucker as I can. I would like to hear of any tweeks you guys may have.

Its a long drive from MIA to Kenedy Space Center. Its much closer to MCO (Orlando) than Miami.

Thank you for that (I am not that well versed in the locations of things in the US :)

How long is "long"?

224 miles, estimated at 3 hrs 37 mins driving time according to Google Maps. have a look on Google maps for yourself. Just enter "Kennedy Space Center" in the search bar (note the American spelling of centre).

Thank you for that. I should have done that myself. Brain not at 100% tonight.

I just noticed that you almost drive through "Melbourne" on this route. Nice photo opportunity :)

or as the locals call it 'MEL-BORING'

Your best bet is to fly into MCO, from there it's around an hour to Kennedy....its an easy drive, with 2-3 tolls as I remember it.

Just off to Logan to fly to Jacksonville FL, but will be working in "little Melbourne" FL on Tuesday. If I can I want to get a few photo's of the other Melbourne.

That would be great, thank you!

Just remember that ANC is seasonal from DFW and AA doesn't serve ANC with its own metal outside of these times. According to ONE rules you can't fly codeshares on non-oneworld metal. ANC is only served by Alaska.

I was about 40% aware of this. Do you know what months they have a service?

Only driving through LA? :(

And are you sure you're actually flying to ANC just to see it? :p

I really want to visit Las Vegas. If you have some really good sights to see. I am happy to go look. I was there many years ago, but did Disneyland, Universal Magic Mountain. Nothing else really.

I reckon the attraction of LA isn't in the touristy attractions, but more so the city and the people. I just love the vibe and the buzz in LA. I find people a whole lot friendlier there and convo comes by much easier with people in LA. I also like the fact that people pay lots of attention to appearances in LA which makes the place a very inspirational mecca for shopping, fashion and people-watching. Unlike SF.

Start your day with a Lobster omelette (ok i'll have to live vicariously for this from herein :() with some decent (for America) coffee at Nine Thirty, part of the W LA. Have a glorious lunch at The Counter in Santa Monica - quite a fave of mine for burgers. Cruise the shops of Santa Monica, then move on to Robertson Blvd which is glitzy and glamourous with emerging young designers - top restos there too. My fave sunnies retailer in the whole world is on Robertson - C by Karina. Established brand names you can find anywhere else at Rodeo Dr. Or for something out of left field - stroll down Melrose. Then conclude at the clubs of WeHo, or sip martinis at the Mondrian. :) K-town good too for something a little different. Or VietnamTown where the drinks (and *ahem* companions) might be cheaper. ;)

These are summer flights, most of the time flown in Daylight/Twilight, especially in June.

This year, AA's DFW/ANC direct services start on May 1st and finish on 30th September.

  • AA278 departs DFW @ 3:45pm, arriving ANC 7:30pm, some 6:45 later.
    .
  • AA279 departs ANC @ 8:45pm, arriving DFW 5:55Am, some 6:10 later.

Personally I use the oneworld time table and the AA *.PDF timetable http://www.aatimetable.com/aa.pdf to work out times etc. The AA timetable is a long one but occasionally has gold like a 2 segment flight with only one flight number.

Can't figure out how to insert a photo, but here's a link to my Flickr page, with one photo of "little Melbourne". I got here late-ish in the evening so haven't had a chance to take any other pics. This one is the view out the window of my room at that Hilton Melbourne beach.

The place is dominated by Patrick Air Force Base to the North, and the hotel is full of British Royal Air Force people.

Will be working in the area tomorrow with a sales rep so should be able to get some more pics of the "other" Melbourne.
