Qantas are backfilling those 747's taking AFL football supporters to/from the AFL Grand final on 29th September with $159 e/w specials.

(Specials - Escape Sale):
Escape Sale

Seats are on sale until midnight Sunday 29 September 2007 (AEST) unless sold out prior.

These one way specials are valid for travel on selected flights departing from Melbourne to Perth between 26 September and 28 September 2007, and departing from Perth to Melbourne between 30 September and 3 October 2007.

Hurry - seats are limited.
(I'll put this here as there no cheap 'domestic' fare forum)

I like the way the seats are on sale to 29 Sept, and also say Seats are limited?? Me thinks they know they can't really fill the planes but they will try :)

What if there is no WA team in the final which is very likely? Will these seats evaporate or are the WA fans commited already to fly no matter what?

Then no one will want to travel either direction that weekend so they can exchange the 747 for a 737.

While some may choose not to go, I expect there is a proportion of people that would fly over whoever was playing. Also, there is a large contingent of people supporting various teams from the eastern states as well.

Qantas currently have 13 scheduled 747's for the 3 MEL-PER dates and 17 for the 4 PER-MEL dates: In all but one case they are showing 9's in every fare bucket:

J9 D9 Y9 B9 H9 W9 K9 M9 R9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9

(The one different is on the 3rd Oct and shows N0 Q9 O0 - rest are 9's).

Sure, you can fly over for cheap, but how much will a hotel room cost? Assuming you can find one at all! :p

There is generally reasonable availibitly of hotels in Perth over the weekend. It is during the week that things are tight.

The cheap fares are MEL-PER before the weekend and PER-MEL after the weekend, so that is the nly way you will get the cheap fares both ways.
