Digital Passenger Declaration

Be interesting to see how far in advance you can do it and whether you can do it on plane wifi (if it exists)
To be similar to the current forms it's got to be after checkin so you can answer the various luggage questions.

What is actually needed is the ability to fill it out on the plane without the need for an internet connection. Then once you land either connect to data/wifi. The alternative is it just generates a QR code that one scans at a kiosk so no actually data connection is needed at all.

Should be an app that does not require an internet connection and perhaps to get around doing it too far in advance, a simple scan of your boarding pass as verification which then pre populates name, flight details and date. Then answer the questions, generate a QR code and scan where required with the information being uploaded. Easy! The fact that BNE trialled this on departure back in 2015, this is well overdue.

I can't wait for the day forms are gone, although luckily as crew, we use a different A4 page declaration and many of us photocopy a pre filled form to save us writing one so often, leaving the date and flight blank.

Definitely an app is the way to go, particularly with families where the parents might have to fill out multiple forms.

While a QR code might work, it's not ideal for transferring data. I'd think an open Immi hotspot that only connects to the secure servers (and possibly app stores for those who have failed to download it).

Had thought of doing that myself before but always suspected I'd get sent to get a real form.

86.

Maybe i have been a bit harsh. They can answer the phone. They just have to (a) hear it (b) remember where they left it and (c) remember to charge it!

Maybe my 94yo mum can drop around with her new tablet (cos the previous one was too slow) and give some lessons or skype them and provide instructions 😉.

She showed off last time I was there by calling out hey google to turn her reading light on and play some of her favourite oldies on blue tooth speakers. (She knows i don’t even have a facebook account or any home automation).

When I got home from visiting her I bought myself a new iPhone seeing hers was two generations younger and much flashier than mine 😳

o what if you don't have a mobile phone, or at least not have a smart phone-they are still out there-, and don't have a computer of any description? Will there be kiosks at airports to help you fill in a form? Perhaps paper will still exist for a while.

How right yu are. Im sick of everything going digital. Prefer hard copy. Espcially when O//seas amd all you want is a hard copy ticket. Especially when phone is UN.
Presumably there will still be some manual way of handling incoming documents... my parents can barely answer their mobile, let alone fill out an electronic record!!

I suspect that there will still be a paper option for those who don’t have a smartphone/battery run flat/technologically challenged etc, but be prepared for a looooong wait in a queue for a real person to process you. It’s what’s called positive reinforcement to reward those who get on board with the new technology.
And I suspect there were many who resisted Smartgate when it was first introduced too, but most people use it fine these days.

I don't have a "smart" phone & never will. I see no need to have to pay a greedy telco for internet access when I have a perfectly acceptable FIXED network at home.

It's so sad to see Australia destroy itself with this nonsense.
This is obviously a precursor for mandating vaccines to go through the borders.

Australia could easily ditch the paper forms like almost every country in the world. Strange timing don't you think?

As others have stated. I'm sure there will still be some other option, which will land up being less convenient. Frankly, I'm surprised you give those greedy telcos any money for your home internet if that's how you feel about them.

How else would they catch people for TV shows like Border Security if they can't point out you've done the wrong thing on your declaration? ;)

Doesn't work for someone who only spends 2-3 months a year at home though.
Plus being on cal when working.
