Hi,

I am flying from Brisbane to Dublin in September and with Emirates. I currently have just over 100,000 Qantas FF points.
Can someone please advise me as to what is the best way for me to upgrade to business or FC.

Thanks

If you are flying EK Metal on QF Flight number you can not use points to Upgrade. Upgrade with points are not available on non QF Metal.

EK Metal? QF Metal?? Sorry I am only new to the forum.

I booked directly with emirates, EK433, EK163, EK162 and EK432.

If I cannot use my Qantas Points what is the best way to get Emirates Skywars points.

Fly with Emirates and accrue them, :D Seriously have a look at credit card or other offers from Skywards partners.

EK Metal means an Emirate aircraft and QF metal means a Qantas aircraft operating your flight. In this case you will be on EK metal and EK flight numbers and as such unable to use QF points for upgrades.

As has been said, you would need to book a Qantas-operated flight (with a QF flight number) in order to request a points upgrade. Unfortunately that means you won't be able to upgrade your already-booked Emirates flights, but perhaps something to keep in mind for next time.

If you are unable to earn the necessary Skywards miles in time, one possibility could be to enquire about paid upgrades at check-in. I've heard that Emirates will sometimes sell cash upgrades at the airport if there are still business or first seats available.

Do Qantas sometimes operate emirates flights?

Do you know what program or credit card is best for generating skyward miles?

Qantas and Emirates do codeshare on each other's flights, but Qantas don't operate Emirates flights. In any case, you would have to both book with Qantas, and be flying on a Qantas aircraft, in order to upgrade using Qantas points. Qantas flights booked through Emirates would likely have an "EK" code (not QF) and therefore be ineligible.

Flying from Brisbane to Dublin, you would need to fly down to Sydney or Melbourne in order to pick up a Qantas flight through Dubai. Qantas have never flown Brisbane-Dubai direct.

In terms of credit cards that earn Skywards miles, there are a few. Many of the direct-issue Amex cards offer point transfers to Skywards. There is also a Citibank card that earns Skywards miles directly. I would personally recommend an Amex card with flexible transfer options, so that you're not stuck with (only) EK miles in the event you're unable to use them for this trip.

Also, some of these credit cards are currently offering sign-up bonuses. That's an easy way to build up a points balance quickly.

Yes, this is know as codeshares. There can be multiple airline flight numbers on a single flight, including Qantas operated flights. This is the difference between Qantas (or any other airline) "Marketed" i.e. sold by Qantas, and Qantas "operated" i,e. Qantas metal. so Emirates flights number on Qantas metal.

You have Emirates flight number on emirates metal - Emirates marketed and operated. It is also possible to get a Qantas flight number on that same emirates flight - Qantas marketed and Emirates operated. These difference are important because there can be implications for frequent flying earning.

Pretty sure they do, most of my domestic QF flights also have EK flight numbers.

But 100% can only use points to upgrade on Qantas operated flights.

Even if you had booked the QF codeshares, you cannot upgrade QF codeshares operated by Emirates. This double-sucks for me being in Perth, because there are no Qantas-operated flights to Dubai. Combined with no upgrades for Economy-Sale anyway it makes upgrades on Qantas almost impossible for me. Only chance for anything is to book a rewards seat.. which for an emirates-operated flight is cheaper than I might have expected but seemingly disappear quickly 12-months out.

Also the QF award seats on EK flights may be cheaper than expected in points but they're very expensive in copayments.
