10 pts / $ for Qantas Vouchers - Back for Xmas 2014

Nice spotting. I wonder if they have fixed the problems they had processing the bonus points last year.

They never fixed it for me. I phoned them about April when the points didn't post from December 2013 and they rang back and said they were working on it and it was a known problem. I never heard from them again or any sign of the points again which I felt was pretty slack (I think it was only 2000 points so I decided it wasn't worth wasting my time any more on it after one round of calling them). Not much of a bonus if they never deliver on the points.

I have never bought these before and know very little about how they work.

Am I able to purchase these ( let's say $1000 ) and receive 10 points per dollar (10000 pts) within approx 8 weeks. Then when I make some QF bookings ( let's assume early next year ) I can use that $1000 towards the cost ??.

If this is basically correct it seems too easy, what's the catch and what have I missed

I imagine that similar to any "gift card" products, QF expects that a certain % of vouchers will never be redeemed for flights. I use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of all my vouchers booking references.

Has it started earlier than normal this year? From now until December 31.

Damnnit. 3 days after I drop $7,500 on QF flights. :(

Though some of them are Flex. Wonder if it's worth the risk of cancelling them and rebuying ? :D

Edit: So it's a little unclear to me how these actually work. If I buy a voucher, do I simply have an option to use it as a part payment while I book a ticket otherwise as normal ?

In that case, why is there a "Redeem" option on the purchase web page ? Would using that just redirect to the normal online booking page ?

Can I use two vouchers for a single booking if the two people whose vouchers the name are in are flying together on that booking ?

Edit 2: If I buy a voucher, is it emailed to me and effectively able to be used immediately ? Or do I have to wait for something to arrive in the mail ?

After accepting the [false] advice last year that residual vouchers will be issued without any hassles, subsequently suffering many painful phone calls to fix the hassles, there is no way I'll buy a $2000 voucher.

The catch is each voucher is created as a booking when purchased. So you can basically only use one voucher towards one booking. Otherwise, these vouchers are excellent products, provided you work within the rules. Strongly suggest you read the full conditions and make sure you understand them.

Must use the "Redeem" option. One voucher per booking although you can have multiple bookings per voucher.

Ta.

Doh. According to the T&Cs:

  • Non-refundable and cannot be used for multi-city, Classic Award or Any Seat Award bookings, points plus pay bookings or redeemed for cash or other goods or services such as additional baggage or seat selection.

No good for my immediate use case then. Doing multi-city. :(

The points took ages to post last year, they will not post until sometime in January. (or never at all!! lol)

I wish that Multi-City bookings can be made using Gift Vouchers, however QF's system still hasn't got this capability yet :(

From the T&C:

Qantas voucher.JPG

Does this mean that I cannot book for 2 pax travelling together on the same PNR?

Whereas another point in the T&C states:

Qantas voucher 2.JPG

which implies that "recipients" (more than one) can be booked.

I haven't done one of these with a voucher and am not sure about it.

Based on the questions so far, I'd say the catch is these things are complicated to use and therefore likely to be purchased by people who end up not being able to use them.

A cynical man might suggest they were deliberately designed like this.

They're relatively easy to use as long as you want to make simple one-way or return journeys, and want to pay cash for the fare. It's a pity they're so limited - QF really should just switch to proper gift cards like every other retailer in Australia.

Using credit cards for QF gift cards do not incur CC fee. And redemption for an actual flight booking where a top up with credit card is required also does not incur the CC fee

Not the case with VA

They are actually quite easy to use for simple bookings. I purchased $1,300 in vouchers and used in all within 6 months and wished I have brought more. The instructions to redeem are stated on the voucher.

All bonus points posted correctly for me and my advice is to not use the vouchers until the bonus points have been posted.

As others have pointed out, it also saves the credit card booking fee if one would have paid for the flights using cash.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I use QF vouchers throughout the year to beat the Credit Card surcharge - even a $5 residual voucher towards a fare removes the entire surcharge and 10 points per dollar will have me stocking up with another batch of $100 & $250 vouchers for next year's travels ✈️

Sure would be nice if Red Roo would pop in and say whether those problems have been fixed or not.

I agree it is very easy to use, the problem comes when you have residual value on the voucher from the booking. Having the residual being correctly processed, can be a lottery, and totally beyond user control.

Doesn't it just issue you a new voucher that you can use in the same way?
