1 night luxury on a budget in HKG. Suggestions?

Hi folks,
I've booked my wife and I on a trip to Japan via Hong Kong. The flight is a 1st class award redemption with a 1 night stop over in Hong Kong.

I'm hoping for a touch of luxury, is anyone aware of good value upmarket options for dining and/or accomodation?

How much do you want to spend? When are you intending to travel? Hong Kong accommodation can be expensive and luxury can mean more than just harbour views. What times are you getting in and leaving, will you want to look around or just chill in the hotel.

We are travelling in Feb 2015, arriving at 5:45pm and flying out at 8:40am the next morning. With this timing we won't be doing any general sight seeing.

The basic plan is to get off the plan in HKG, drop off bags at hotel and go out for a nice dinner somewhere. Then head back to the hotel before heading back to the airport bright and early to check out 'The Wing'.

I'm a fan of the Mira, on Nathan Road, in Kowloon, opposite Kowloon Park. Hong Kong Hotel | Luxury 5 Star Hotel - The Mira Hong Kong

Its definitely more expensive than a regular HKG Hotel, but I would argue that its value for money (but its not in the 'super luxury' class like the Peninsula Etc)

Rooms are good; décor and feel a bit funky (which I am decidedly not!) and eating options range from buffet to gourmet (and priced accordingly). Service is excellent. Its no longer on the free HKG Airport Express rail hotel shuttle bus route, but only abt a 5-10min walk from the nearest stop. Very close to MRT.

I would stay at a hotel near the airport,easy access once off the plane & easy train ride into Kowloon or the Island ,plus you would not have to get up early in the morning.

With that timing, can I suggest that you try to get a hotel that is on the Airport Express rail free shuttle bus route. I think its on their web site. (But if you are not familiar, at Kowloon or Central rail stations, you go down to the bus area and there are 4 or 5 mini bus routes, covering maybe 4 or 6 hotels each, leaving every 15 minutes or so. Free, and very handy. If your hotel isn't on their drop-schedule, tell them where you are nd it may be close to one of their drops (like the Mira). BUT on the way back, make sure you leave plenty of time. They tend to bunch up and you can be waiting more than the 20 min gap between busses, and of course there are the other hotels to pick up at.

I'd still recommend looking at the Mira, although it may be a bit pricier than that you indicate.

I wonder if its worth heading into town with those timings. You might get in by 7PM and its an early start the next day, good hotels can often charge $400 or so. One alternative location to consider is either the Regal or Marriott near the airport, both have executive lounges and it may well be that you dont feel like much to eat anyway. The Marriott is ranked 27 on tripadvisor, thats pretty high for an airport hotel when compared to downtown options.

Both will be cheaper than downtown, another plan of attack would be to check in to a normal room, freshen up then grab the train in for dinner, its very cheap as a same day return, next morning your ready for the wing in a matter of minutes!

I was going to suggest Hutong as soon as I saw this post, its a spectular restaurant both in terms of view and the food, highly recommend! Some of the meals can be very hot though so it helps to like hot food.

I reckon you have plenty of time catch the train into kowloon, get a hotel shuttle to your hotel and then head out to dinner, you have plenty of time in the morning to get back to airport. I can suggest Hotel Madera just off Nathan rd, small boutique hotel ,killer rooftop bar looking directly at harbour and central, stunning. Head across Nathan rd to temple Rd, lots of local restaurants and markets everywhere. Great night, and up and back to airport in morning. HKG is a great place don't miss out.
As a bonus at Kowloon station you can check your bags in for the flight and head to the wing for breakfast.

I just has three nights at the Sheraton (2nd-5th May). Had a Towers room so you can bypass check in and use the outside lift straight to 16th floor for Towers check in. The Rate was $7440 HKG for three nights including Harbour View room and late checkout. Full Breakfast in cafe on 2nd floor or the Oyster bar on the 18th included.. But you would miss breakfast.. It also included free wifi, free phone calls, daily pressing service etc etc. Free coffee/tea in Towers lounge 24 hours and free drinks with an open bar in Towers Lounge from 1730-2030. It came with great snacks like dumplings, fish cakes, mini greek salads and deserts. I would save a good dinner for Japan and use the lounge. And at 8pm you have a cracking view of the laser light show from Hong Kong Island. I was off the QF127 (J), through immigration, got train ticket (return) $300 HKG that was valid for my entire stay and let me use all other rail and onto to train in 8-minutes.. I only had carry on. Train takes 23 minutes to Kowloon.. Off the train and downstair to free bus transfer where i waited 5 minutes and the Sheraton was the first stop on my route. I used a taxi back to Kowloon station which cost me $4AUS. There is a one star Michelin dumpling house over at the IFC.. it closes at 2100. just take the Star Ferry across. Its called Tim Ho Wan.. Very casual but very popular. Two Photos from my room and one of Towers lounge.

I can vouch for the Regal Airport Hotel being very good value considering its a five minute walk from the terminal. I've stayed there before on an overnight stopover and can say there's nothing like the feeling of waking up, getting ready and walking to the terminal! As others have indicated, if you drop your bags when you get there, take the airport express in to town for dinner (a same day return ticket is the same as one-way). From what I remember they also have rooms which have quite a decent view of the runway, if you could score one of these it might be an added bonus. Don't recall being bothered by aircraft noise at all either.

I would be going for the W at Elements - 20 mins on the train direct to the airport either way, beautiful rooms and convenient for restaurants in Sky Dining at the top of the ICC, their chinese restaurant does excellent all-you-can-eat yum cha also.

Luxury on a budget doesnt really exist in HK; Hutong is great, but it could easily cost 100-150 a head, which wont leave you much leftover for the hotel. if you do go, ask for a table next to the window as the views are quite good. Prolly easier to stay on the Kowloon side if heading to Hutong. LKH at the Four Seasons is often booked out and it aint cheap either so your best chances might be to get the hotel concierge (or Amex if you have one) to book for you.
One of the better value dinner options is the counter/bar at Robuchon (less than 100 a head) - but make sure u get a seat at the bar because the restaurant meal will set you back 200+ a head.

If you have time and patience, you might want to try priceline bidding for a hotel; you should get a much better price although you wont know which hotel you are booking till the payment is processed. However a little bit of research on google will give you a fair idea on what you are likely to end up with.

I would stay at the Kowloon Shangri-La in an Horizon Club room. You get 'free' drinks and food in the HC lounge until 8pm with a fantastic view of the harbour. You are not going to be starving post your flight so the 'buffet' of often very good foods (hot and cold, incl desserts) should be enough.
You can stay on for more drinks after the complimentary service finishes, or just head out for a walk on the harbour boardwalk out the front. Or there are some good bars (Bulldogs, etc) within a 100 metres and still with views of the water and island.
The breakfast in the main restaurant downstairs (included in your HC room price) starts at 5.30 or 6am and is amazing and very good!
Get the Airport Express to Kowloon station and a cab (maybe A$4 or $5) to the hotel. Same thing in reverse the next morning.

I took SWMBO to the Peninsula Verandah Restaurant. A buffet like I have never seen, service of the highest order, and with a glass of house champagne came out at about AUD$150 per person. A good view of the light show from 8pm as well.
