As a frequent flyer on Seaman's ticket I think you will find they cannot be upgraded at any price. I recently flew SYD-SIN on QF on a seaman's ticket and my requested upgrade was rejected due to ticket class.

Got status matched through my status matched Air Berlin gold, which was status matched to my Etihad gold which was matched to my Qantas gold. This is a great game!

Used my Air Berlin Gold on VA454 yesterday(DRW/BNE). Priority checkin lane, lounge access and priority boarding. I'm only Velocity Red. Very nice experience. Took everyone by surprise. Checkin thought it was Etihad, lounge person had to run a check but was very welcoming once I passed muster...
