    Brisbane dinner - 20 January 2026

I'm not sure - will try to get an answer before the event, but if everyone is indeed able to order & pay for their own food through me&u that would be quite convenient!

Cathay now also bans OW FF from pre-selecting seats

I just booked a CX paid Y fare on the Cathay Pacific website, entered my QFF number at the time of booking, and was able to select exit row seats for free (I have oneworld emerald). Cannot change the FF number now, though.

    Worst (international) business class seats

I'm surprised the TK 777 J seats didn't get a mention. It's 2-3-2 and the middle seat has absolutely no privacy.

Jetstar when booking on Qantas points

Which cabin class? If Economy, I think it's a Starter fare with 20kg checked baggage included.

UM issue highlights systemic VA decline across all areas - will it get better?

I agree that they should have turned up earlier. I equally think it's very poor for the VA staff to tell a paying customer "go away and find some other way home". That isn't really OK.

Article: Once-In-A-Lifetime or Feels Like Home: How Do You Holiday?

I agree that there's a fundamental difference between places you go to see, versus places you go to be. Sometimes, a place that you intended to go to only once to see the sights can also become a repeat destination. Kazakhstan is very much in this category for me. I went in with zero...

    Brisbane dinner - 20 January 2026

Good to see that there's a good amount of interest from the BNE crowd :) I plan to make a booking with the restaurant in the next few days. If you haven't yet RSVP'ed or so far have only replied that you're a "maybe", and you would like to come, could you please let us know in this thread.

    Cloncurry Airport temporarily closed

What are the chances this airport actually reopens on 1 February?

    Cloncurry Airport temporarily closed

Cloncurry Airport is closed until the end of this month after monsoon rain a couple of weeks ago damaged the runway. Resurfacing works are underway now. Qantas is rebooking passengers to Mount Isa, 120km away, and the TSV-CNJ-ISA flight is skipping the CNJ stop for the time being...

The Qantas Status Run Master Thread

Not sure, but NTL-ADL (direct) is available for $437 and earns 60 SC.

The Qantas Status Run Master Thread

Is this the cheapest regularly-available QF J flight out there?

    HEL - 55min connection

This would be fine on a single booking but I would not attempt it on separate bookings, particularly if you have checked luggage. Without checked luggage it might work if the inbound is on time. Assuming that the issue preventing you from booking this on one ticket is not married segments, I...

I'm stepping down from the AFF editor role

This is probably as good a place as any to tell this story... Some years ago, I checked into a random independent boutique hotel in Belgium and the owner was super nice to me. This was a short time after a Winter Olympic Games in which the other Australian Matt Graham did well. I got upgraded...

New "Airline Fuel fee" on some Qatar redemptions via Velocity

The charges on Cathay redemptions have also massively increased. So this seems to be something initiated by Qatar Airways, not Velocity. HKD7,755 is ~AUD1,486. This would not affect AAdvantage redemptions because AA has never passed on fuel/carrier surcharges on partner airlines (with only...

New "Airline Fuel fee" on some Qatar redemptions via Velocity

Velocity has not updated its table of carrier charges applicable to QR redemptions. https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/flying-status/use-points-for-flights#partnertable2 Any charges not listed in that table should be genuine third-party fees/taxes, not arbitrary airline or program-imposed...

Radisson Flagstaff Gardens is now an EVT hotel

I booked a stay at Radisson Flagstaff Gardens a couple of weeks ago on the Radisson website. Turned up yesterday to check in and there’s no longer any Radisson branding whatsoever. Turns out it rebranded on 1 January as Flagstaff Gardens Hotel Melbourne and will become a Rydges hotel at the end...
