Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

Do they have three evening slots? Going back to the days when they used to fly via SIN x 2, BKK and HKG connections to LHR, QF2(BKK/SYD) and QF10 (SIN/MEL) used to depart in the evening, whilst QF30 (HKG/MEL) and QF32 (SIN/SYD) used to depart around midday. But who knows, they might to...

And if you want further complication, throw in plane rotations with the JFK service, although I think most of us suspect the schedule for JFK will be similar to QF3/4, except leaving SYD later and arriving back earlier.

But it's also about choice, what drives traffic is both product and frequency. EK, SQ, QR all have multiple options out of LHR, having a 2-3 options could aid QF in the market. For some a 3pm departure equate to leaving for the airport at midday, so more or less writing off the day, whilst...

Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

It could also be the other way around, it has been argued that the A380 is too big for the market following sunrise, so you could turn the A380 around in SIN and deploy it elsewhere, such that the A380 from SYD meets up with a 787 from BNE but the SYD flight number continues on to LHR (or the...

Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

They could of course downguage the flight to suit a smaller market and even originate it in BNE. Also there’s a matter of timing - the Sunrise flights will be unable to operate out of London in the evening and arrive in Sydney early morning (at least for 6 months of the year). During the...

AirAsia X, KUL-MEL Premium Flatbed (1-2-1 config) and a KLIA T2 fiasco (or how to nearly miss your flight)

Luckily last time I passed through KLIA2 it was a same plane return on Sccot. Transit security was a breeze ! But have been there a couple of years ago with some time to get through.

AirAsia X, KUL-MEL Premium Flatbed (1-2-1 config) and a KLIA T2 fiasco (or how to nearly miss your flight)

I've always taken the view that what is printed on the boarding pass (if it is) as the time the gate closes is the most important metric. Leave the "be at the gate" timing to the rarely travel crowd or those travelling with the kitchen sink in economy class. So it seems you had the timing...

    SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

SQ need a 6th daily to MEL ASAP! Even in economy saver awards (and sometime advantage awards) are difficult to come by and comm tix also going through the roof.

Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

Don't think it changes the maths around the plane requirements but flying time SYD-LHR should be <22 hrs and LHR-SYD <20 hrs. If you add SYD-PER + PER-LHR it comes to about 21:40 flying time (and 20:10 or thereabouts in the other direction). Repeat these calculations with SYD-DXB+DXB-LHR or...

Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

Rome is barely served by SQ, and isn't by CX, which would suggest the premium traffic perhaps isn't that compelling. Would have though FRA or even ZRH might have supported more premium traffic. Seattle and Vegas surely wouldn't need Sunrise aircraft, if the 787's can go to DFW, they can...

Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

Yeh,, Qantas has consistently said that about PER-LHR and I agree that it certainly looks like remaining on the back of strong O&D traffic. But it remains to be seen with the sunrise flights, how much will they cannibalise existing premium traffic on QF1/2, how much they will steal from...

Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

To an extent. Although there is also an argument for a single long haul with a short hop bejng more flexible than a one stop mid journey, in terms of sleeping patterns (thinking the J/F cabins here ). I know out of SIN (as my origin point) if involving overnight trip I prefer non stop to...

Sonder: gone as quickly as they came

Marriott have terminated their agreement with Sonder hotels and these are all now gone from the booking system: https://www.reuters.com/business/marriott-terminates-licensing-agreement-with-lodging-rentals-company-sonder-2025-11-09/ Very sudden as we were looking at NYC hotels on Friday night...

They reduced capacity because they simply couldn’t compete with the plethora of other one stop services, but the differentiation this time is non-stop. Of course to be seen how much of a differentiator this will be.

Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

Sounds like an excuse as MEL and SYD are more or less the same distance from LHR (MEL is actually 70 mi closer).

What's your tip(s) for surviving the cesspool of Hotel booking websites?

Or arriving on a train and dealing with the hundreds of touts waiting there to find a pension to stay in ! Aah I miss the randomness of it all.

Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

I remain sceptical that we’ll see sunrise services between MEL and LHR despite them being mentioned originally (in favour of double daily from SYD and SYD-CDG perhaps) , and as such the via SIN service will pivot to MEL-SIN-LHR to serve MEL, BNE and a new A321 service from ADL.

JQ Avalon expansion. DPS/ADL/BNE double daily.

MEL? Timing of these flights is identical to the fourth MEL-DPS flight of the day (JQ35/36). Leading to speculation (my own of course 🤣 ) that this approach will be replicated in Sydney once WSI opens.

Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

Interestingly on Qantas run a single A380 service SIN-LHR each day. They also run up to 9 services a day between Australia and SIN, so their presence in SIN isn’t entirely dependent on the LHR service. I guess the AF, AY and KL codeshares support this traffic as well, but there is very...
